Using the Moon in Electional Astrology

with 10 comments

After combing through a few years’ worth of notes on Electional Astrology and its rules, here are some details for using the position of the Moon when electing or choosing a favorable time to begin any number of things: a project, a marriage, moving to a new residence, starting a job or school, planning a garden, you name it, because anything–an event or person–which begins has a birth (natal) chart.

This branch of the art called Electional Astrology helps us figure out when celestial factors are optimal for good outcomes–or as near as can be determined. And with the Moon as timer, there are a few things to be considered so that enterprises will proceed as you prefer.

1. Take into consideration the angular relationship (aspect) between Sun and Moon, for if the Moon is waxing (increasing) in light–going from New Moon to Full–matters will move along quickly and easily.

Yet there are caveats to remember: approximately 24 hours after a New Moon (about 12 degrees) is too soon to begin, as are the 24 hours (12 degrees) following a Full Moon (which might also be considered ‘too late.’)

2. If your project would benefit from publicity, debut it a few hours prior to the culmination of a Full Moon.

3. Avoid beginning when the Moon is void-of-course (makes no major aspects while in its current sign) for then your decisions will be skewed by lack of realism, focus will be difficult to maintain, and nothing will meet your expectations–things “go nowhere.”

4. There are a few positions of the Moon to avoid altogether–when in Scorpio (its Fall), in Capricorn (its detriment),  or–as the ancients would caution if they could–avoid beginning things when the Moon is in the degrees of the Via Combusta, aka the Burning Way.

These are the degrees including and between 15 Libra and 15 Scorpio. Many modern astrologers have left behind the Via Combusta but I suppose it depends on how important your enterprise’s outcome is to you whether or not you prefer to ignore this centuries-old rule (precession of the signs notwithstanding.)

Personally I would include this rule if only because Scorpio is ruled by contentious Mars (or volcanic Pluto…to me, Scorpio’s sub-ruler.)

5. It’s best if the Moon is not applying to major aspect (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, or opposition) to a retrograde planet. Rx planets indicate delays or other timing problems which may ruin your plans. And they tend to act more on internal levels rather than expressing well in the outer world.

6. Since the Moon can indicate fluctuating or unstable conditions, avoid times when the Moon is rising (on the Ascendant, which represents the event itself.)

7. Unless the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto) are well-aspected and/or relate directly to the matter (ex: Uranus = technology, computers–buying a new laptop when Moon is trining Uranus could be a promising venture) try to keep the Moon’s contact with them to a minimum; Mars and Saturn contacts should be minimal as well.

8. The planet that is the chart-ruler should likewise not be in adverse aspect to the outer planets which tend to bring conditions which are completely out of one’s personal control.

9. The first planet which the Moon applies to by major aspect should be studied fully for its condition–its positive or negative aspects with other planets, retrogradation, whether it’s angular, etc–for it will have primary impact on how things will proceed.

So first try applying these 9 rules when starting minor projects and you may find that Electional Astrology is a useful method for choosing times for the major events and enterprises of your life!

  4. Well, there was a *very* minor legal “redo”. Actually, less of a redo and more of a fact check, but it all worked out. And the “emotional baggage”, I think, would have been my needless worry over the redo. Doesn’t Saturn also rule “groundless fear(s)”? 😉 That’s me. I didn’t think the Mecurcy/Saturn aspect would have any bearing since it took place before we filed? On the same day, but many hours prior.

I may have to read your Web site closer to see if you do professional readings. You’re very good!

  5. Mercury trine Saturn is very good with Mercury’s connection to signing papers and contracts and Saturn’s stability (esp with Saturn about to station Direct.)

Moon oppo Venus? this could lead to some sort of legal re-do but hopefully minor if it occurs and emotional baggage, if any, may need to be adjusted withn the situation.

  6. Hey Jude,

(Sorry, couldn’t resist. 😉 Beatles fan, and all.)

Anyway, I haven’t actually cast a chart for the filing yet. I merely chose the timing before we filed.

One thing I forgot to mention is that we also intentionally filed during a Venus hour, at 2:31 pm and, yes, before the *Moon* opposed Venus at 10:25 pm (the last aspect of the day). I wrote Venus opp Venus, and I didn’t realize I had mistyped till I read your reply. The last aspect before filing was Mercury trine Saturn at 11:11 am.

My first astrology teacher told me 27 years ago that when you use an ephemeris (such as Jim Maynard’s–my favorite) to pick the best time to do things that supposedly, she claimed, all the aspects at the time of or after the event till the end of the day have a bearing on the matter. So I was concerned that the last aspect of the day when we filed was Moon opp Venus.

So, with this corrected info, do you have any further thoughts or advice? Thank you for what you have written so far! You are an excellent astrologer!

Thanks also for the compliment about my name; I was born in the Year of the Dragon. The Green Dragon, to be specific, but a friend who is a Taoist astrologer once told me that in ancient times, it was called the “Azure Dragon”–hence, my name.

    Thanks for your time.

    Best regards,

  7. Thanks, Azure Dragon (cool name!)

Perhaps I need clarification but it sounds as if you’re saying that you filed before Venus opposed Venus. If this is correct, not to fret. What was the last aspect of Venus just before or at the time of filing? Is Venus the chart-ruler?

But even if I do misunderstand, a Venus oppo Venus aspect isn’t the worst of the worst certainly and can bring better understanding of common goals bwo conflicts now, better understanding later.

As always, some adjustments may be necessary partnership-wise due to this Venus oppo Venus influence esp regarding values and/or finances, but all should be well if you’re both determined that it be!

I’d say read Venus in both signs and see if there’s insight there in relation to your natal chart/s because the opposite sign/degree of any natal planet = the unconscious/shadow/Illumination Point and may be used in any situation when more info is wanted. Use this info for adjustments if they’re needed in your partnership situation…plus, the oppo could represent traits of the two of you esp since oppositions = relationships–having a value of 2!

    Thanks for your kind comments,

    jude

  8. Thanks for posting this excellently written and concise guide to using the moon in electional astrology. Today, my partner and I filed a domestic partnership with the county. I chose today because I wanted to do it while the moon is waxing, and next month Mercury is retro. Also, I chose Friday because it is a Venus day. But after we got home and I looked at the aspects for today, I noticed, to my dismay, that the last aspect Venus makes tonight is an opposition to Venus! 😦 If we’d waited till Monday, the moon would have been waning in Scorpio, so that wouldn’t have worked. What to do?!? Is there anything we can do to minimize the negative aspect to Venus??? Thanks for your time.
