Cold Hearts in America (and three quotes)

The first quote concerns America’s shadow personality, the one most of us prefer to ignore, and it fits in with some Republican audience members’ shouted sentiments like, Let him die!, and other such cold hearted remarks and attitudes–and they know who they are.

We’d all better hope that those with such harsh sentiments toward their fellow man–fellow Americans–aren’t nurses, doctors, or other healthcare workers.

And I’d best fix my own cup of tea, thanks. You, I can’t trust.

“The crimes of the United States have been systematic, constant, vicious, remorseless, but very few people have actually talked about them. You have to hand it to America. It has exercised a quite clinical manipulation of power worldwide while masquerading as a force for universal good. It’s a brilliant, even witty, highly successful act of hypnosis.” -Harold Pinter, 2005 Nobel Lecture

“Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.” –Hermann Goering (1893-1946) Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe, President of the Reichstag.

“The people never give up their liberties, but under some delusion.” –Edmund Burke (1729-1797) Irish-born British statesman, parliamentary orator, and political thinker

Uncomfortable how these three quotes go together on some fundamental American level, isn’t it?

Well, as a long-time fan of Mark Twain, I do suspect that it’s his restless squirming in his grave that we’ve been hearing for decades now given the sorry state of journalism which worsens by the minute.

And now it seems journalist Twain knocks upon his coffin lid, begging to jump out and give our current batch of Orwellian propagandists and media monopolists and moguls some sharp punches in their lousy, warmongering, anti-societal, ‘one world government’ snoots!

But mostly by way of his mightier-than-the-sword pen, of course.

Wise words from JFK and General MacArthur

It’s a surprise to me to discover that the first quote was uttered by General Douglas MacAruthur. The second quote from JFK is familiar to most people and I hereby cop to having the same sentiments:

“It is part of the general pattern of misguided policy that our country is now geared to an arms economy which was bred in an artificually induced psychosis of war hysteria and nurtured upon an incessant propaganda of fear.” – General Douglas MacArthur, Speech, May 15, 1951

“…if by a liberal they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people – their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, their civil liberties…if that is what they mean by a “liberal” then I am proud to be a liberal. “ – John F.Kennedy

So am I.

Yet they’re still whipping things into a state of war hysteria and practicing ‘an incessant propaganda of fear’ to this day! And sadly for the economy and future of America, their tactics work.

Will the American people ever wake up to and resist how Washington works against our best interests?

Why so easily deceived?

Three quotes for you tonight spurred by thoughts of our US natal Mars/Neptune square and its inclinations toward glamorous men, inspired actions, deceptive activities, weakened military, and/or misdirected motivations:

“It is discouraging to think how many people are shocked by honesty and how few by deceit.” – Noel Coward – (1899-1973) British playwright

“One who deceives will always find those who allow themselves to be deceived.” – Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527) Italian Statesman and Political Philosopher

“The world wishes to be deceived.” – Sebastian Franck-(1499-c.1543) German preacher, author, humanist reformer

Hypocrisy now a theme in the news

Speaking of Washington politicians, have you noticed of late an uptick in the use of the word ‘hypocrisy’ in the news with the charge being leveled against both Republicans and Democrats – and a little in between?

That must be why this quote, which turned up in an Information Clearing House Newsletter today, sounds so….informative…and apt to me, I must suppose…

“What makes it so plausible to assume that hypocrisy is the vice of vices is that integrity can indeed exist under the cover of all other vices except this one. Only crime and the criminal, it is true, confront us with the perplexity of radical evil; but only the hypocrite is really rotten to the core.”

– Hannah Arendt, political philosopher, born in Hanover, Germany, 1906

Yep. Even outside of Politics there’s a crock full of it going around like a case of mumps, and we may all look in the mirror when it comes to admitting negative behaviors, of course.

It’s just a saving grace that mainstream media is always on the righteous side, isn’t it? (puh!)

John Locke on Aggressors, Robbers, and Pirates

“That the aggressor, who puts himself into the state of war with another, and unjustly invades another man’s right, can, by such an unjust war, never come to have a right over the conquered, will be easily agreed by all men, who will not think that robbers and pirates have a right of empire over whomsoever they have force enough to master, or that men are bound by promises which unlawful force extorts from them. Should a robber break into my house, and, with a dagger at my throat, make me seal deeds to convey my estate to him, would this give him any title? Just such a title by his sword has an unjust conqueror who forces me into submission. The injury and the crime is equal, whether committed by the wearer of a crown or some petty villain. The title of the offender and the number of his followers make no difference in the offence, unless it be to aggravate it. The only difference is, great robbers punish little ones to keep them in their obedience; but the great ones are rewarded with laurels and triumphs, because they are too big for the weak hands of justice in this world, and have the power in their own possession which should punish offenders.”

John Locke (1632-1704)
The Second Treatise of Civil Government (1690)

Noam Chomsky interview Oct 14, 2009

Noam Chomsky was interviewed on US foreign policy on Oct 14, 2009 by Jon Snow and several subjects were mentioned such as: progress in Latin America, the state of human rights, America’s response to 9/11, Israel’s security problems, the US approach to Iran, the US ‘democratic deficit’ where Mr. Chomsky comments on the “irrelevance of popular opinion in the US” (amen!), and Barack Obama’s ‘burden of expectation’ which Chomsky relates to JFK’s presidency, among other subjects.

It’s actually quite a brief interview and includes a 2-minute video of Chomsky speaking just after the attacks of 9/11. Check it out!
