Welcome to South Sudan!

Comet Skies by Jude Cowell

Celebrations continue in South Sudan now an independent nation in its own right. Welcome and Congratulations to the people of South Sudan!

The new Sudanese nation is astrologically flavored by the July 1, 2011 Solar Eclipse @ 9Can12 since the eclipse occurred only a week ago and is the initial eclipse of a new Saros Series: new nation, new Series, and it’s the Syzygy Moon of the new nation, too (the last lunation prior to birth: a Solar Eclipse!)

Tribal, business-oriented Cancer is, of course, the sign of Home, Homeland, Domestic Scene, Family, Protection, Food, and other nurturing and security matters along with its oceanic connotations as the sign of The Crab in the sea.

If you wish to view the ‘karmic’ July 1, 2011 Solar Eclipse Horoscope, its image may be found on my Political Astrology blog Stars Over Washington for those who feel inclined to peek. You’ll see that the eclipse horoscope is set for DC as is understandable for a blog concerning that city, and it includes my usual scribbled notes and chicken scratches upon the click-to-enlarge chart.

(Disclosure: if there’s a pen or highlighter nearby, this pencil artist will use it, even on a horoscope. And yes, I was the kid drawing on my parents’ walls and quite incorrigible about it! There’s just something about murals…)

So with South Sudan ‘born’ under a certain midpoint picture, its meaning may be useful to know. Independence became official at midnight, a typically used and symbolic hour for such beginnings but since this slow-moving midpoint picture has been in force for some days, the exact timing of the Independence Horoscope doesn’t affect the midpoint picture’s influence.

Much Ado about Jupiter/North Node

First, let’s consider the meaning of the Jupiter/NN pairing from Michael Munkasey’s book, Midpoints: Unleashing the Power of the Planets in the realms of Politics and Business. Both Thesis and Antithesis are given.

Paraphrasing Jupiter/NN in Politics and Business: any, all, or none may apply:

Thesis: matters pertaining legal consequences of treaties with allies; religious leaders with legal opinions expressed through friends; focusing on imports which disrupt trade or business.

Antithesis: religious groups interfere excessively with or though legal processes; a legal justice system bound and hampered by erroneous decisions about the status of groups or parties; closed legal societies.

Now you know how the nebulous energy of planet Neptune works in Astrology and in the life it describes, right? Veiling, confusing, deceptive, defrauding, merging (yet the North and South have just separated! is this a secretive merging with the NWO?), or more positively Neptune may provide inspiration, spirituality, and/or big dreams or visions. (Note the references to religion, above and below.)

So let’s add Neptune to the midpoint picture for The Gaseous Giant sits upon the mid-degree between expansive Jupiter in money sign Taurus and North Node (NN = direction; path) in questing Sagittarius – any, all, or none may apply:

Jupiter/North Node = Neptune being deceived by promises or intentions of friends; errors in judgment about the desires or needs of associates; a need for religious contacts; seeming more mystical or mysterious than intended; emotional inhibitions within partnerships; indecision or vacillation; unreliability; instability; disappointment; getting sober again (after celebrating?! jc); lack of clarity about objectives; sharing the spirit but not much else. (Tyl; Ebertin; Munkasey.)

And of course, for South Sudan the off-on energies of the Cardinal Grand Cross/Square patterns are in play as well and I know that the country’s independence has been a long time coming…and now the die is cast.

Now if you toss your browser in any direction, you’ll find many excellent articles written about the influences of these difficult planetary patterns which the world has been dealing with since 2010 for they involve the Saturn-Uranus opposition squaring powerful, manipulative, secretive Pluto, guardian and horder of The Wealth.

Plus, three major generational planetary cycles are being activated now: the Great Conjunction/s of *Uranus and Pluto in the mid-1960s (collapse of the old order, protests, strikes, street violence, Civil Rights, etc), the Saturn-Pluto cycle, the current one which began on November 8, 1982 with their one Great Conjunction @ 27Lib36 (hardship, hard labor, cruelty, violence) – this was during Reagan’s era as was the 1988 Great Conjunction/s of Saturn and Uranus which occurred 3 times in the 27-to-30-degree range of Sagittarius.

Yes, the tension between status quo Saturn (restriction; the past) and independent, freedom-loving Uranus (progress; the future) is palpable these days. As a pair they are associated with the Middle East, particularly with Israel and Palestine.

Other transiting planets have and will come along to trigger, activate, or set off the Cardinal (outgoing, initiating) energy on the Cardinal Cross of Matter (physical plane) so the entire world remains in-the-woods on that score as difficult conditions on Earth are reflected above in the Heavens.

My hope is that all nations, new and old, attain Peace without interference from the power elite’s globalist take-over artists. Such a vain hope, I know!

*The closest that transiting Uranus and Pluto come to an exact square (from Aries to Capricorn) is on August 8, 2011 when Uranus-Pluto energies crescendo so this date is definitely one to watch.

Similar themes or events from the 1960s may resurface more obviously in August 2011 to be dealt with again and/or a ramping up of their signature issues will be experienced especially by individuals, nations, or groups having natal planets on or near the mid-degrees of Virgo/Pisces or Gemini/Sagittarius. jc

Read the Journal of John Wesley in Georgia

Now it’s always a sneaky thing to read other people’s journals or diaries yet these excerpts from the Journal of John Wesley concerning my home state of Georgia – what became the 13th Colony – are interesting to those who like early American history or are curious about the Native American tribes in the area, circa 1730s.

Methodist minister John Wesley’s Wiki bio gives a good bit of info on what became his unsuccessful mission in Georgia, his escape back to England after a breach-of-promise suit, and his turn toward a pietous group of believers, the Moravians, whom he encountered on the voyage.

A Little Astrology Perchance?

When we look at the horoscope of the landing of John and Charles Wesley in Savannah, Georgia on February 8, 1736, a mission taken on at the request of Governor James Oglethorpe (disclosure: my Dad’s Georgia ancestors came to Oglethorpe County in 1821, a few miles from where I sit typing at you), some interesting factors come to light using the lens of Astrology.

Moon was in ambitious Capricorn throughout the 24-hour period so we find a Sun AQ-Moon Cap combo of energies. And since Sun-Moon = ‘partnerships and marriage’, we may glean a little belated info concerning John Wesley’s broken-off relationship with fellow traveler Sophia Hopkey, and his proselytizing mission to the New World.

The Sun AQ-Moon Cap (Air-Earth) blend indicates steadfastness, resourcefulness, independence, honesty, and shrewdness with a broad-minded, deep-thinking approach to life. A dedicated search for the truth is notable along with firmness of purpose and an interest in society’s needs – traits laudable in a religious minister’s character and objectives.

There is an egalitarian quality within a natural sense of authority added to an ambition to perform one’s true vocation and hopefully to help others along the way. This blend presents an enormous appeal for all types of people whether superiors, inferiors, royals, strangers, or the down-and-outs, and is shared natally by some interesting people such as:

Abraham Lincoln, John Barrymore, Betty Friedan, Rosa Parks, Franco Zefferelli, Mia Farrow, and….often in the news of late…Ayn Rand, author of the distopian novel Atlas Shrugged and idol of Paul Ryan and Alan Greenspan, among other political figures.

Two quotes from Lincoln and Barrymore seem to apply to our topic – one primarily for Wesley’s mission in Georgia, the other for his relationship problems with Sophia (who married William Williamson):

“With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God give us to see the right…” – Abraham Lincoln, 2nd Inaugural Address March 4, 1865

“In Genesis it says that it is not good for a man to be alone, but sometimes it’s a great relief.” – John Barrymore

Yet Sun AQ-Moon Cap can exhibit an over-strict adherence to principles and a no-frills approach to social life which gives an uptight Spartan vibe and a tendency to remain aloof and self-contained. That, along with stubborn pride, may have been at the base of Wesley’s lack of follow-through with Miss Sophia who, upon reflection these 275 years later, may have been well-out of such a marriage. One hopes she soon came to the same conclusion and enjoyed wedded bliss with Mr. Williamson.

Sun AQ-Moon Cap’s ‘Images for Integration: A revolutionary is elected president…An alien civilization comes to Earth to rescue man from imminent destruction.” (Sun Sign-Moon Sign, Charles & Suzi Harvey.)

The ‘rescue’ must refer to Wesley’s desire to ‘rescue’ Native Americans from their religious errors, something he wasn’t able to do – perhaps because many tribes had their own relationship with our Creator before he arrived on the New World scene – he was the alien!

(Read the excerpts from Wesley’s Journal linked above for more details on the Native American conditions in Georgia and Wesley’s opinions on them.)

Interestingly, religious propagator Jupiter was posited at 00AQ33 upon Wesley’s arrival in the New World 1736 which is the zodiacal position of the Sun each January 20th when we hold presidential inaugurations with the Sun being the significator of The Leader (president.) And the Sabian Symbol for ‘1AQ’ = “An Old Adobe Mission”, a reference to the Utopian corporatists whose vision of the New World included, as they now assert, a ‘New World Order.’

The influence of Moravian pietists upon Wesley’s religious principles (which famously began during the voyage to Savannah) may have had a hand in his fleeing back to England and opting out of the grand scheme of which James Oglethorpe was a part. (We’re currently dealing with long term effects of such a mission of Manifest Destiny as the America as we’ve known it is being collapsed and dismantled before our very eyes.)

Another general factor which affected Wesley’s 1736 mission in Savannah is the Solar Eclipse Saros Series in which his arrival fell, the 8 North @22Lib14. To me, its influence describes details of Wesley’s religious mission and his relationship troubles! See what you think in this paraphrase from Brady’s Predictive Astrology:

‘Flashes of genius, inventiveness, intuitive leaps, good ideas, vivid dreams, visions, and new-found inspirations (new-found – the Moravian influence which began aboard ship?) which pull us away from social life and relationships and cause strain in personal lives – freedom is needed’ (!)

The 8N Series began with an eclipse on May 17, 1501 with Sun/Moon @4Gem51. Two midpoint pictures from the initial eclipse may apply to Wesley’s situation in Savannah with manipulative, transformative Pluto at apex of both:

Venus/Saturn = Pluto (26Sco12 Rx): unusually strong tension in love relationships; passing states of chaos.

Moon/NN = Pluto: separation through a higher power or providence; fateful associations. (Ebertin; any, all, or none may apply.)

(Astro-Note: if you’re familar with your own Pre-Natal Eclipse Series, perhaps you’ve looked at the horoscope of the initial eclipse of that Series for further clues concerning its effects upon your life! My own is quite telling.)

Well, there’s an astro-snapshot of John Wesley’s experiences in America and hopefully some insights have been gained on the Methodist-movemnt-founding minister known for his preaching of personal salvation through Jesus Christ and justification through faith.

Force on the side of the governed

“Nothing appears more surprising to those who consider human affairs with a philosophical eye than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few, and the implicit submission with which men resign their own sentiments and passions to those of their rulers. When we inquire by what means this wonder is effected, we shall find that, as force is always on the side of the governed, the governors have nothing to support them but opinion. It is, therefore, on opinion only that government is founded, and this maxim extends to the most despotic and most military governments as well as to the most free and most popular.”

– David Hume, Scottish philosopher and historian, “Of the First Principles of Government” 1758.

Quote compliments of Information Clearing House; following Sun-Moon details courtesy of moi…

David Hume was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on Thursday, April 26, 1711 (OS) during a Great Conjunction of Uranus and Pluto in the late degrees of Leo.

The Uranus/Pluto combo is about revolution and reform; it describes those who are out of the ordinary and are endowed with universal genius (Ebertin.) Seems 1711 was good year for brilliant intellect!

Pioneers, explorers, and those who bring new things into existence correspond to this blend of electric, original Uranian and deep, rich Plutonian energies.

Certainly the Scottish philosopher, economist, and historian, Hume, the ‘Scottish skeptic,’ may be considered one of these.

One of his several works, ‘The History of Great Britain’ in 6 volumes was published from 1754 to 1762. It was a bestseller in his lifetime and was used well into the 19th century as a standard of British history.

It traces events from the Saxons to the Glorious Revolution (anti-Catholic revolt against James II, which climaxed after Protestant William III’s landing in England on Nov 5, 1688. Robert Hieronimus, in his book, ‘The Secret History of the West,’ states that the Glorious Revolution was sinister and had its roots in the time of the Restoration of Charles II and Richard Cromwell, Oliver’s son. Charles II was restored to the throne by the Templars – and from there it gets complicated.)

David Hume’s Earth-Earth Sun-Moon blend is Taurus-Capricorn, giving him a shrewd pragmatism, a natural sense of authority, and a tendency toward bossiness.

Possessive and stubborn, this blend knows what it wants and is quite demanding in relationships – perhaps part of the reason he never married.

A desire for recognition and security is usually achieved with Sun Tau-Moon Cap, and with Hume, people still write about him and read his works. If an 18th century man can be true to type (as we tend to see things) he was a self-restrained yet approachable fellow who had what we would now call an old-fashioned sense of honor.

This blend indicates a paternal concern for the needy, yet it may have a fixity on established routines, and be overmaterialistic.

Noel Tyl says this blend has organizing energy and a strong desire for influence; idealism and realism work hand in hand, usually for a materialistic structure. (‘Synthesis and Counseling in Astrology’, Tyl.)

Famous folk who share this natal Sun-Moon blend are: Adolf Hitler, Cher, Jimmie Stewart, David Byrne, Willie Mays, Yehudi Menuhin, and ‘Peter Pan’ author, James Barrie, who wrote:

“You’ve forgotten the grandest moral attribute of a Scotsman, Maggie, that he’ll do nothing which might damage his career.”

Sun Tau-Moon Cap has one ‘Image for Integration’:

‘A royal banquet honours the longest-serving headmistress of the oldest and most prestigious school in the land.’ (‘Sun Sign-Moon Sign,’ Charles and Suzi Harvey.)

Hume is associated with the Scottish Enlightenment and his contemporary list of friends included Adam Smith, John Locke, and George Berkeley.

There are those who now regard him as the first ‘conservative philosopher’ but the term ‘conservative’ in today’s usage of the word isn’t strictly accurate compared to its use in the 1700s.

David Hume showed in his essays the importance of ‘Moderation in Politics’ and you and I can both think of many modern politicians who could use an indepth study of the work and an embracing of the concept.

Abraham Lincoln’s 200th anniversary

Yes, it will soon arrive, the 200th anniversary of the birth of our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln.

There is much to say on the subject of his inaugurations and on his assassination by actor, John Wilkes Booth, and I am currently studying the Inauguration charts for 1861 and 1865.

But for now I shall point you to the sidebar column of Pages for  ‘Abraham Lincoln: natal + assassination chart’ which I have updated today with an article link to Byron King’s assessment of Booth, Booth’s grudge against tyrants and Mr. Lincoln, and the horrific proceedings which occurred a mere month after Lincoln’s second inauguration on March 4, 1865.

As you know, Lincoln was inaugurated back in the day when US presidential inaugurations were held in early March, thus the Sun in mid-Pisces was conjunct a difficult star, Achernar…keywords: ‘risk of rapid endings; crises.’

In 1861, Sun 14Pis11 (‘the leader’ in a national chart; and Moon = ‘the people’) was conjunct wounded Chiron 14Pis34 at the inauguration’s Midheaven.

Chiron in *Pisces is a poster child for race relations and racism – and for being a victim on behalf of the collective, but of course Chiron was an unknown factor in Astrology until it’s discovery in November 1977.

Moon 16Gem38 is in the secretive 12th house conjunct warring activist Mars 17Gem15; rebellious chaos-creator Uranus 25Gem25 had just risen (at noon of Mar 4, 1865; Washington DC); ASC 2Can41 brought US natal Venus to the fore (based on US natal chart, ‘Sibly’ version) along with planet Venus’ issues such as: relationships, art-theater-aesthetics, money, and values.

My plan for the next several days is to publish both inaugural charts of Abe Lincoln  (1861 and 1865) – prior to Feb 12 – at Stars Over Washington, and the feed for the post will appear in the sidebar column here when I get the project done.

So I hope you’ll check out Byron King’s article – it’s definitely worth a read – and I’ll see you on the come-back!

Note: scroll down for the text of Lincoln’s second inaugural address which is linked on this blog under ‘Speeches’ – the address is one that Barack Obama studied before giving Jan 20, 2009’s inaugural address.

*Pres. Obama’s natal Chiron is in Pisces.

UPDATE Feb 11 2009: now published at Stars Over Washington (see feed in sidebar) –  the Inauguration 1861 chart with notations added of the 1865 Inauguration, Lincoln’s natal planetary placements, and America’s natal placements, too.

Tolstoy and Saturn opposing Uranus

My old Astrology friend, Philip Brown, has updated his excellent article on Leo Tolstoy and the Saturn-Uranus opposition.

Philip relates the opposition of 1828, the year of Tolstoy’s birth, with US  ‘reform president’ Andrew Jackson, who was elected during the shattering (Uranus) of the old social order (Saturn)  of 1828’s opposition of Saturn (form; tradition) and Uranus (disruption; rebellion; revolution.)

Count Leo Tolstoy, best known for his novel ‘War and Peace’, was quite the system breaker during his lifetime preferring the peasant class to his own aristocratic status. Or perhaps he just didn’t care for oppression wherever he saw it.

So it’s:  War (Uranian revolution) vs Peace (Saturnian stability) and a man with the concentration to stick with a novel that details, among other things of his time, Napoleon and his army’s  defeat in Russia.

The Natal  Astrology of the Count:

Tolstoy’s birth data is conflicting so AstroDataBank gives it as DD for ‘Dirty Data.”  Even the date is in dispute due to different calendars, but the version Philip has used (click link to see the natal chart) is:

Sept 9, 1828; 10:52 pm; Tula, Russia. The alternate date is August 28, 1828.

I shall go with ‘Sept 9, 1828’ as well which gives Count Tolstoy Sun Virgo-Moon Virgo, a double-Earth blend of practicality with much concern for material well-being and health.

Double-Earth’s deepest, darkest fear is of chaos, so there we see his Saturn-Uranus opposition in play. This personality blend is a stable and well-grounded combination, a master of whatever medium it chooses. Tolstoy-the-author is an excellent example of this.

Sun Vir-Moon Vir: a perfectionist who identifies with work; utilitarian; precise and analytical; concerned and conscientious; efficient and good with details; synthesizes knowledge and uses it; a thinker and a doer; worships the intellect; approaches creativity with a scientific mind; concerned with health and service; modest and may have an inferiority complex.

SunVir-Moon Vir in relationships:

Kind-hearted, sentimental, and hates to offend anyone in any way. The motto is: ‘actions speak louder than words’; discreet in love matters; devoted but feels hurt if unappreciated; may be prone to remaining in an unsatsfactory long-term relationship due to a love of moral beauty and to a difficulty in breaking established routines.

There is a tendency for high standards to inspire finicky fault-finding, and an ‘old-maidish’ style may become evident.

“Images for Integration:  A well-oiled printing machine hums away, producing perfectly bound copies of ‘The Layman’s Guide to Essential Nutrients’…A ballerina practises alone in a room of mirrors and, sensing her imperfections, focuses on her flaws and begins again.”

(From ‘Sun Sign-Moon Sign’ by Charles and Suzi Harvey, who also use Sept 9, 1828 for Tolstoy’s birth.)

And here’s a quote from the Saturnian-Uranian author himself:

“The happiness of man consists in life. And life is labour…The vocation of every man and woman is to serve other people.”

Sounds exactly like a double Virgo, sign of  the book author (Gemini’s shorter attention span tends toward writing articles), and Tolstoy’s ‘writer’s planet’ — Mercury — is in Virgo as well!

Check out Philip Brown’s article here:

September 20, 2013 Update: unfortunately I don’t think the article remains available but you can try.

Obama-Biden or McCain-Palin?

In a Freudian typo-slip, the title of this post was about to be ‘Obama-Biden or Palin-McCain?’ but it may not matter much longer according to an excellent post-with-predictions on the outcome of the November presidential election which Nancy has written at Starlight News:

http://starlightnews.com/wordpress/?p=33

McCain’s Palin ‘bump’ may be fading soon, and as many astrologers have observed before: John McCain’s health really IS an issue with transit Saturn opposite natal Saturn (in his 6th house of Health) on the menu.

If That transit doesn’t have health implications for a previous cancer patient of his advanced years, I’ll have to eat my ephemeris, won’t I? And of course, Saturn rules skin, and the August 1 Solar Eclipse is in McCain’s Pre-natal Eclipse Series making this a banner year for him in one way or another.

Eclipses, if they ‘bring’ anything at all, usually bring to light what one least expects so it’s impossible to pre-judge how they will act upon a native, but given McCain’s prominence within the collective, I should expect that “his” Eclipse will manifest noticeably as an event or events.

Then there’s Barack Obama:

One thing about Obama’s campaign that I’ve not had time to delve into as I’d like this week is his recent trip to Iraq and the hay the GOP will be making of it – whether they spin it out of whack or not, apparently Senator Obama ‘had speaks’ about a troop withdrawal date (and postponing it until the new administration comes in), which gives the Rovians lots of ammunition to manipulate into a big political problem for the Democratic candidate – even if he was well-intentioned.

Plus, tonight I’m officially in count down mode because this Friday evening is the Craig Ferguson comedy performance we’ve been pining for and I can hardly wait.

You’ve probably heard by now that Craig was feeling unwell and had to visit his doctor the other day and he’s been diagnosed with…..election fever!

Oh, and Happy 221st birthday to the US Constitution today! You’re a little gray around the muzzle and under constant attack – in shreds actually – but the majority of we-the-people still love ya!

Wednesday, Sept 17 was marked by a ceremony at Montpelier, home of the Architect of the Constitution (and the Bill of Rights), President James Madison, because the renovations have been completed returning Montpelier to its original state and size.

The du Pont family’s wings have been removed reducing the house’s size from 36,000 square feet to 12,261 square feet. ‘Madison’s Temple’ is still on the premises, of course.

In attendance were Jim Lehrer and Chief Justice John Roberts, some muckety-muck politicians, along with Madison’s descendants, and descendants of the slaves he kept. With Madison elected president in 1809, the plantation has been restored to the time period 1809 – 1836, the year of his death.

And if you find yourself in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains you may wish to have a visit there yourself – snag more info here:

http://www.montpelier.org/

And speaking of Founding Fathers, Tuesday I posted a bit on John Adams’ natal chart with a very interesting quote from the man himself – a quote which the current gaggle of Washington politicians, world bankers, and court justices could apply to themselves any time they see fit and the whole world would be much better off if the ‘power elitists’ would take a good look at themselves in John Adams’ mirror:

http://starsoverwashington.blogspot.com/2008/09/john-adams-critiques-power.html

George Orwell

Here’s a post with Orwell’s natal chart (the generally accepted version with its Balsamic Moon phase of the prophet and prognosticator) along with the horoscope for 9/11/01’s attacks in NYC:

http://starsoverwashington.blogspot.com/2006/02/orwell-and-wtc-attack-91101.html

And here’s a post you may previously have seen on this blog – it contains Orwellian words that remain timely for 2008 and which only deepen with meaning:

http://starsoverwashington.blogspot.com/2008/04/orwell-explains-mass-media-deception.html

And here’s an entry mixing Orwell with a little Thomas Paine, another prognosticator extraordinaire:
