SpaceWeather has a gallery of photos of Comet Lulin now brightening in the constellation Virgo and visible to the naked eye:

Even better: get out that backyard telescope –  the comet is a gassy green fuzz and set to peak on Feb 24!

Dec 1 2008: Moon eclipses Venus in Europe

Space Weather News for Monday, Dec. 1, 2008
When the sun goes down tonight, step outside and look south. Beaming through the twilight is one of the prettiest things you’ll ever see–a tight three-way conjunction of Venus, Jupiter and the crescent Moon. The event is visible from all parts of the world, even from light-polluted cities. People in New York and Hong Kong will see it just as clearly as astronomers watching from remote mountaintops. Only cloudy weather or a midnight sun (sorry Antarctica!) can spoil the show.

The great conjunction offers something extra to Europeans. For more than an hour on Monday evening, the crescent Moon will actually eclipse Venus. Astronomers call such an event a “lunar occultation.” Venus emerging from the dark edge of the Moon is a remarkably beautiful sight. Sky watchers across Europe will be able to see this happen.

Aurora Watch and Sunspot Alert! 10.11.08

Space Weather News for Oct 11, 2008

NEW SUNSPOT: A “new-cycle” sunspot belonging to Solar Cycle 24 is emerging near the sun’s northeastern limb. This is the third time in as many weeks that a new-cycle sunspot has interrupted the year’s remarkable run of blank suns. The accelerating pace of new-cycle sunspot production is an encouraging sign that, while solar activity remains very low, the sunspot cycle is unfolding more or less normally. We are not stuck in a permanent solar minimum. Readers with solar telescopes should train them on the sun this weekend to observe sunspot genesis in action.

AURORA WATCH: Sky watchers from Alaska to Scandinavia should be alert for auroras tonight. A solar wind stream is buffeting Earth’s magnetic field and causing high-latitude geomagnetic storms.

Fireballs in the sky!

Space Weather News for Sept. 9, 2008
FIREBALL OUTBURST: This morning, Sept. 9th, a surprising flurry of fireballs lit up the sky over eastern parts of the United States. All-sky cameras at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama, recorded 25+ meteors, most as bright as Jupiter or Venus.

A preliminary analysis by NASA astronomers suggests this is an outburst of “September Perseids,” a little-known shower that has erupted this way three times in the past century. Although the show is almost certainly over, sky watchers are advised to be on the lookout for more fireballs tonight and in the nights ahead; the September Perseids are not well understood and they could surprise us again.

Weekend Moon Eclipse cam!

Space Weather News for Aug. 15, 2008

LUNAR ECLIPSE: This Saturday, August 16th, people on every continent *except* North America can see a lunar eclipse. At maximum, around 2110 UT (5:10 pm EDT), more than 81% of the Moon will be inside Earth’s shadow, producing a vivid red orb in the night sky visible to the naked eye even from light-polluted cities. The entire eclipse lasts more than 3 hours, so there’s plenty of time for gazing, drinking coffee, and taking pictures.

North Americans can watch the eclipse via live webcast beginning 3:30 pm EDT on Saturday afternoon. Eclipse-cam links may be found, along with time tables, visibility maps, and eclipse photo galleries, at http://spaceweather.com .

PERSEID RECAP: The Perseid meteor shower peaked on August 13th with maximum rates exceeding 130 meteors per hour. Despite interference from the bright Moon, it was arguably the best Perseid show in years. Browse the gallery starting here:

Jules Verne and Endeavor flybys may be seen Tuesday!

Space Weather News for March 24, 2008
TRIPLE FLYBY ALERT: Space shuttle Endeavour has undocked from the International Space Station and the two spaceships are now orbiting Earth in tandem. This sets the stage for a series of rare *triple* flybys, which many sky watchers will be able to observe on Tuesday, March 25th. It’s a triple because three spacecraft are involved. First to appear is the European Space Agency’s Jules Verne cargo carrier flying 2000 kilometers ahead of the ISS-Endeavour combo. Jules Verne is about as bright as a 1st magnitude star. Four minutes later, and even brighter, the space shuttle and space station follow Jules Verne across the starry sky–a spectacular sight!
US and Canadian readers can find out when to look using our new Simple Satellite Flybys tool: http://spaceweather.com/flybys. (Note: We haven’t forgotten about the rest of the world. Work is underway to expand our simple flyby predictions beyond North America to all parts of the globe. Stay tuned.)
SOLAR ACTIVITY: Who says the sun is quiet? Two new sunspots are growing rapidly near the sun’s equator. Just yesterday they were almost invisible; now the active regions are several times larger than Earth and are putting on a good show for anyone with a backyard solar telescope.

Discovery of Uranus, 24 Gemini, and political reformers like George Bush

Aali’s Astrology has an interesting article written by the excellent Jeff Jawer on the discovery of the outer planets, Uranus in particular:

Uranus was discovered in Bath, England by William Herschel in 1781…just between the American and the French Revolutions. Its discovery degree is 24Gemini+ and the article gives some info concerning this degree’s turning up quite often in the charts of writers, political reformers, and astrologers.

Yes, Uranus can be a real system buster, all right, and chaos is another word often laid at its door..’its’ because it’s the only planet named after a place: the ‘sky’ or ‘heavens.’

As you know, George Bush was born with North Node conjunct Uranus which indicates mixing with unusual groups or, more specifically, ‘political associations advocating reforms’ according to Reinhold Ebertin in his book, ‘The Combination of Stellar Influences.” Bush’s conjunction is in the 19–22 degree range of Gemini…quite close as outer planets go.

Astrologers Alice Bailey (Sun 26Gem) and Dane Rudhyar (Jupiter 28Gem) are examples as are FDR and wife, Eleanor: his Mars is at 27Gem and Eleanor’s Saturn clocks in at 24Gem.

So in a sudden spree of disclosure (appropriate for Uranians such as ourselves) I shall admit to having natal Uranus 27Gem+ Rx with Secondary Progressed Uranus 26Gem. You may as well know now as well as later.
