Are top Obama aides delinquent in taxes?

Perhaps you noted on Tuesday evening in his SOTU 2012 Address to a Joint Session of Congress and the nation that President Obama put quite an emphasis on the topic of paying one’s fair share of taxes.

Tres embarrasingly, it’s reported that several of Mr. Obama’s top aides haven’t gotten around to paying theirs and I cannot imagine that anyone who assists the president thinks that this irony–some might say, hyposcrisy–won’t be used by an opponent as Mr. Obama campaigns for re-election!

Why, even Mitt 1% Romney pays what he legally owes (and not a penny more)…well, except for taxes on any gold dubloons he may have tucked away in very secret places.

Oh, the ruling class. Aren’t they a caution?

A quote on free men from Robert Heinlein

“Little force is needed to control a man whose mind has been hoodwinked; contrariwise, no amount of force can control a free man, a man whose mind is free. No, not the rack, not fission bombs, not anything – you can’t conquer a free man; the most you can do is kill him.” – Robert A. Heinlein, If This Goes On, 1940

And here is a truism from Adlai E. Stevenson made current again by the partnership between lousy politics and uppercrust greedsters: “A hungry man is not a free man”.

Oh, and here’s another thought from Mr. Heinlein which I can’t resist posting since in the US our esteemed IRS awaits our funds (due on Monday April 18 this year, not April 15): “Taxes are not levied for the benefit of the taxed.”

Amen.

Plus, if you haven’t before you may be interested in visiting the website of the Heinlein Society.

Read IRS building crasher’s suicide letter

Joseph Stack, the man who airplaned into the IRS building in Texas, left a suicide letter for ‘Big Brother IRS man’ and you may read it if you wish. It covers a lot. See if you can find anything he says in the letter that isn’t true. I haven’t so far.

Except for the part about violence being “the only answer.”

Swiss banks to out US tax evaders

Being wealthy is no license to cheat. And in many cases, the cheating has already occurred: you got rich and richer, benumbed conscience under wraps.

Now as many as 5,000 Swiss bank accounts may be opened to the gaze of the IRS while US tax evaders squirm at the uncovering of their deceit…and pay up.

Or at least, that’s the line being promoted. But knowing how plutocrats rule the world one wonders whether the proposed ‘5,000’ account holders being outed are the top culprits, or merely the lower or middle ‘savers’ tossed to the jackals (IRS) to save the really big fish (ya know who ya are. And you’re not reading this.)

It always seems to me that the more money you possess, the more protection you have (and need) in the world so we’ll see if the unmaskings – and the pay-ups – amount to anything much at day’s end, and whether these back-tax monies paid to the US Treasury Dept by way of an arm-twisting exercise will ultimately be used to – disappointingly – continue America’s warring stance.

Update on Swiss banks closing US accounts

Here’s an update from Bloomberg News on the hot button issue of the closing of foreign bank accounts held by Americans who have been able to avoid paying their US taxes – but is the jig really up?

Yet non-tax-evaders living and working abroad are in danger of having no place to bank at all if the IRS continues its long-overdue crackdown on such fraudulent practices which have been enabled by the Swiss banking system.

So perhaps Americans working in foreign lands will have to consider online banking as a solution to their ‘Americans are pariahs’ dilemma!

Not for me, thanks: but my own bank here can’t shut up about the joys and conveniences of online banking. In their dreams…do I look that gullible?

It will be interesting to see if the IRS sticks with its Sept 23 deadline for foreign accounts declarations, won’t it?
