A Neptune Return for Sherlock Holmes

If you enlarge the image of the natal horoscope of literary character Sherlock Holmes, with the ‘birth date’ based on first publication, you’ll see a few notes penned upon it including a midpoint picture (center) which describes why I chose ‘8:12 am GMT’ to time the chart. This is, of course, speculative, since a publication date rarely includes a particular hour. For astrologers this is inconvenient when setting up a ‘natal chart’ for a well beloved character so several methods of determining a ‘birth hour’ may be utilized.

Neptune: Planet of Masks, Deception, Illusion, Disguise, and Theater

As you can see, the midpoint picture of Neptune-Midheaven (Mc) = Sun (personality) reveals one who uses ‘physical disguises’, one of Mr. Holmes’s favorite ways to investigate by secretly spying on people when necessary. Of course, sunrise, noon, or other hours may be experimented with when sleuthing for the birth time of Sherlock Holmes but here I use 8:12 am GMT, January 6, 1854 (London, England, naturally) for the reason stated:

SherlockHolmes

Oh, and did I mention that 8:12 am GMT in London on that date gives a sunrise (solar) horoscope? Such a solar chart relates to career and as we’ll find from the Sun Capricorn-Moon Aries personality blend of this very famous consulting detective, a materialistic view and an over emphasis on career matters are indicated by this Earth-Fire combination of energies, here with a Saturn-Mars influence. And in the many celluloid portrayals of his personal traits, emotionalism is not a strong suit, just as in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s stories. Objectivity, not subjectivity, is his goal in all things though more recent portrayals tend to soften him up a bit to be more pleasing to a modern audience. Still, his Sun Cap-Moon Aries blend identifies Sherlock as shrewd, obsessive, tenacious, courageous, and self-motivated; he’s an astute thinker with high standards and powerful leadership qualities. Insensitivity to others is shown via a brusque manner and an irritable moodiness when things don’t go his way–ask his favorite nemesis, Moriarty–Sherlock Holmes is a very sore loser!

Yet Mr. Holmes is honest and has a deep sense of responsibility along with a constant desire for excitement, for as you know, boredom and trivialities simply won’t do. Having Neptune in its own sign of Pisces figures into his use of drugs but 19th century drug use is a little beyond the scope of this post. Actually my primary goal is to provide the dates of what is called a Neptune Return for, as  you see, Sherlock’s natal Neptune at 11 Pisces 30 is basically the slow moving planet’s recent and current sign and degree in the Tropical Zodiac. Due to retrogradation, Neptune’s return to its 1854 degree of 11Pis30 occurs five times, one of which has already occurred (and see the link, below, for the latest news on Season 4 which went into production Spring 2016 and will most likely air in January 2017 or thereabouts). Intriguingly, natal Neptune conjoins one of the sleuth’s natal asteroids and you’ll never guess which one —Nemesis!

The astrological keywords for Nemesis are ‘divine retribution’ and ‘the unbeatable foe’ and I suspect you agree that Doyle’s Moriarty character perfectly.fits those descriptions. This makes me wonder if Conan Doyle was aware of the Neptune-Nemesis synchronicity in early January 1854 especially since he dabbled in spiritualism and other esoteric subjects long studied by secret societies such as the Freemasons. At the least, I think he knew of the Fates and Nemesis as the Greek goddess of divine retribution since Greek Mythology was a hot topic in the 19th century–and one’s destiny and karma (reaping what was sown) are universal laws at the heart of many Sherlock Holmes tales, are they not?

Here’s the theatrical Neptune of Sherlock Holmes returning for another bow:

  1. April 29, 2016
  2. July 30, 2016
  3. February 24, 2017
  4. November 11, 2017
  5. December 3, 2017

Prominently, the July 30, 2016 Neptune Return chart shows a major and exact transit to the character’s natal Sun (15Cap45) in the form of a visit from creepy Pluto, planet of power, transformation, mystery, hidden wealth, and death. Pluto-to-Sun denotes a time of intense self-awareness when a desire for recognition is uppermost and courageous actions are taken by those with the determination to do so. However, we may see Sherlock retreating even more than usual as he deepens his methods of investigation and  makes some sort of new start, or takes things in a new direction. Fear may also be in the script with is considerable ego as a driving force, plus, ghosts from the past will weigh heavily upon his present actions, as noted in the update linked here:

Season 4 Update

Now that’s a strong emphasis on Pluto though we must also tip our deerstalkers to natal Mars at 16 Virgo38 as the handle of a Bucket planetary pattern (which would be labeled a Bowl were it not for its handle, Mars in scientifically minded Virgo, the sign of categorizing, organizing, tidiness, attention to details, and dedication to work. Discriminating Virgo with Mars, planet of motivation, action, and energy, describes Sherlock Holmes perfectly with his magnifying glass and microscope at-the-ready for detecting minute details of any mystery. And as Bucket handle, Mars in fussy Virgo is the main channel for his natal planets’ energies to express (confirmed bachelor as he is and devoted to finding the truth)  and as the handle planet melds the two halves of his horoscope and psyche into a whole person (or, a whole character in this case.)

His Mars-Neptune opposition is prominent and relates to his drug use and his ability to play roles by disguising himself, but also to the way in which some characters tend to distrust Sherlock Holmes and think he’s a sham and not a ‘real detective’ at all! But let us continue…

Neptune-Nemesis, Pluto-to-Sun in Saturn-ruled Capricorn, and Mars in Virgo. Neglected so far are his Mercury in Sagittarius, sign of The Seeker. Mercury rules the thinking and reasoning processes and style of communication (and siblings such as Mycroft!) and in Sagittarius denotes the philosopher with manifold interests–a deep thinker wh0 strives for justice and truth (Ebertin), and is pre-occupied with problems, puzzles, and mysteries. Perhaps this chart’s Scorpio Midheaven isn’t far off since Scorpio loves a mystery, can be quite morbid, and Midheaven is the Goal Point of any chart. Solving mysteries fits Scorpio well yet oddly enough there are no planets in the sign though there are three in opposing Taurus (see below).

Rising as you see are his Chiron in Capricorn conjoining natal Sun. Chiron is the blindspot but also The Key in a chart and is often described as The Wounded Healer, or Christ consciousness. Does Sherlock play the role of the healer who needs healing himself? Does he come close to martyrdom during his life-and-death struggles, perhaps? I would say so though you may disagree if you wish. Coupled with natal Sun, Chiron denotes one for whom pride and power lie in ambush (Nolle) and through Chiron-Sun we see this unique character’s innate sense of destiny played out across Neptune’s silver screen as Sherlock burns with purpose within his (imaginary!) existence that, as noted previously, cannot be trivial but must be larger than life.

Nearby is Jupiter at 8Cap06, the planet of success. Jupiter precisely conjoins his Syzygy Moon (8Cap32), the last lunation (a New Moon) prior to January 6, 1854. The sign of Jupiter indicates that Sherlock relates to others as an authority (Capricorn) and of course we can all agree to that. A New Moon prior adds to the novel and unique quality of Doyle’s then-popular character of a ‘consulting detective’. Additionally, the Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse of his birth date is the 18 South Saros Series which happens to be our current series with themes of separations, partings, and endings but with positive outcomes (Brady). 18 South last manifested on March 9, 2016 at 18Pis55.

Sherlock’s Jupiter-Chiron brings in a crusader quality (knighthood) and possibly adds more secret society vibes to his chart as Mycroft sends him off on secret missions for Crown and country. Or tries to.

His North Node in Mercury-ruled Gemini hints at the character’s many associations and contacts and the seeking of stimulating ideas and new projects though communication may remain on a superficial level with all but the chosen few.

Then there is lady Venus, planet of the attraction principle, love, beauty, diplomacy, and relationships, in very early Pisces, the sign of  her exaltation. Since Sherlock tends to prefer freedom to union, we may assume that his love of music and the violin is described here with his Sun-Moon personality (yes, the Moon remained in Aries the entire 24-hour day) already noted for an avoidance of the emotionalism that Venusian romance would require. Also note that the agent ‘Irene Adler’ character-The Woman, as he called her–may be indicated by Venus in Pisces, a sign of mystery and subterfuge. Plus, the condition of loving a woman who is elsewhere, be it in death or otherwise, can be enough to satisfy an ethereal Venus in Pisces.

Now as you see, there is quite a lot of Taurus the Bull in the chart–Saturn Rx, Uranus Rx, and Pluto Rx. Suffice to say that a tendency toward materialism is supported here though eccentric Uranus in Taurus adds a flair for taking risks and a resourcefulness in seeking out finances. A certain inertia may be noticed with Saturn in stubborn, sometimes lazy or indolent Taurus while Pluto in this sign of wealth denotes one who is obsessed with gaining possessions in a way which may affect his destiny.

And yes, there are many other chart factors of note in this speculative natal horoscope for Sherlock Holmes but to mention them all would put you, dear reader, in serious danger of reading a rather verbose book rather than a WordPress article! So I’ll sign off by sending Good Wishes to cast and crew as fans such as myself await an exciting new season of Benedict Cumberbatch (Mars in Virgo) and Martin Freeman (Sun in Virgo) in their roles as Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson airing on Masterpiece Theater in 2017!

Astrology: Tom Ellis – TV’s “Lucifer”

Lucifer: Fallen Angels, Demons, Karma, and a Royal Star of Persia

by Jude Cowell

On the evening of January 25, 2016 Lucifer premiered on FOX TV at 9:00 pm est. Rising in New York City (NYC to represent the East Coast USA) at that moment were transiting Jupiter (an actors’ planet) and North Node of the Moon (public contact), traveling in tandem at 22 Virgo and bestowing good fortune where appropriate. Not everyone was thrilled with such existential topics being aired as part of a racy dramatic endeavor, and critics became somewhat mild in their appraisals. Fans of the comic character ‘Lucifer’, created by Neil Gaiman, were for the most part less than impressed. But the ladies–well, they were quite a different matter, thanks to Mr. Ellis and the cast.

A magnetic effect seems to be centered upon the show’s leading actor, Tom Ellis, born November 17, 1978, hour unknown, in Bangor, UK (Wales) with Sun, attracter Venus, and intense Uranus in Scorpio. Or allow me to be specific: the magnetism seems to be centered upon the hypnotic effect of Mr. Ellis’s dark, Scorpio-looking eyes. TV technical effects add to the impression as ‘Lucifer Morningstar’ threatens miscreants with black eyes that turn…well, check them out if you haven’t. Hopefully, the following video won’t be spirited away due to infringement rights though it probably will be–and soon:

~:~

Now back to January 25, 2016 9:00 pm est when the Sun was clocking in at 5 Aquarius 31. Round up the degree to 6 Aquarius and you have a solar spotlight directed at the natal (birth) asteroid ‘Lucifer’ in the natal horoscope of Tom Ellis. His natal Moon (either in the last third of Gemini or in very early Cancer–details, below) is in 10th house of Career and Public Status and conjunct Midheaven, a signature for major publicity (Moon) on the world stage (MC.) His natal Mercury-Neptune conjunction at 17 Sagittarius+ is very much the signature of a thespian and holds a fount of creativity within. If memory serves, he became active in the profession at age 17, plus, natal Uranus at 17 Scorpio joins Venus (9Sco53 Rx) and his Sun in the mystical, dark sign of Scorpio.

And if we consider the Sun’s ’25 Scorpio’ Sabian Symbol, we find “An X-Ray” which seems to relate the those magnetic, hypnotic eyes we discussed a moment ago. X-ray vision comes to mind–you know, like in comic books back in the day?

As for major success, there’s the pilot episode premiering during a planetary Locomotive pattern with the publicity seeking Moon in the lead to guarantee popularity. And with the Moon (the public) at 29 Leo05–precisely conjoining the 12th house cusp (29:05 at 9:00 pm est) and also reflecting a certain Royal Star of Persia, Regulus (keywords: success if revenge is avoided). Of course, Regulus has a long history of affecting events and people on Earth, is mentioned in the Bible, and is aka, The Watcher of the North–an angel. The King or The Kingmaker are also roles that Regulus may play yet it’s doubtful that any characterization of the devil could represent him truthfully if he didn’t take revenge on the guilty. Punishment, TV’s Lucifer says, is what he does. Or used to.

However, when planets are linked with Regulus, who ruled as king in long ago golden days, there comes a caution: that revenge is his nemesis and if he takes it, he will ultimately lose all his power and success. The desire for revenge is a desire to which he must not succumb. As you may agree, few human beings manage to withstand such a warning even while knowing that natural laws ensnare us all within the universal net of karma and we must reap what we’ve sown.

Now I doubt that the scriptwriters of Lucifer have any such plot in mind but that’s part of one version of the myth associated with Regulus, and on at least one level Tom Ellis’ Lucifer, fallen from grace as he is, seems to be following a Regulus pattern of behavior by succumbing regularly for if you really want to do something you should do it, Lucifer advises.

Of course, none of the above mentions the pure fun the program provides as a brilliant Welsh actor embodies for us God’s fallen offspring playing and romancing in the form of an L.A. nightclub owner. Lucifer is, some say, his Father’s favorite son but he strongly disagrees. The good news for #Lucifans is that Lucifer is renewed for a second season so everyone will have future opportunities to enjoy the show’s intoxicating blend of sophistication and humor mixed with sophomoric innuendo and the lightest touch possible in a story full of temptation, pride, angel wings, and featuring the epitome of the rebellious son who refuses to swallow his overwhelming pride and return to his Father.

Now if Tom Ellis was born on November 17, 1978 between the hours of 8:16 pm GMT and midnight, his Moon is in tribal, self-protective, home-loving Cancer. Chances are better that his Moon is in Mercury-ruled Gemini which adds a light touch to his intense Scorpio Sun, so here are the ‘Images for Integration’ for this conscious-unconscious combination of energies as provided by the Harveys in their book, Sun Sign-Moon Sign:

Trivial Pursuits goes macabre…A virtuoso violinist touches the hearts of her audience” (or in this case, pianist!) “…The mystery of life in a strip cartoon…Rodin’s The Kiss, Hands.”

Yes, Rodin was born under the influence of Sun Scorpio-Moon Gemini as was Dostoyevsky who appropriately informs us that,

“If the devil doesn’t exist, but man has created him, he has created him in his own image and likeness.”

And on Mondays 9:00 pm on FOX TV, that image looks a lot like Tom Ellis.

The Intensity of Mickey Mouse

The Wikipedia page and bio for Walt Disney’s most famous cartoon character Mickey Mouse reveals that his public debut in film short Steamboat Willy occurred on November 18, 1928 in New York City.

Wondering what makes Mickey tick, I set up a horoscope for this date and place though an exact hour of the first showing remains a mystery. Steamboat Willy played prior to the main feature and ran for two weeks, netting Disney $500 per week. Quite a sum in 1928 and launching a lucrative career in cartoon animation.

On November 18, 1928, the Moon remained in Aquarius (natal sign of America’s Moon–July 4, 1776) and of course the Sun was in intense Scorpio, ruled by Mars and sub-ruled by Pluto. I contend that the Sun sign relates to Mickey’s creator, Walt Disney, who was not the jolly artist we kids saw on TV but a dark, driven, and profane man.

In fact, the debut of Mickey Mouse had a Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse in the 2 South Saros Series with themes of ‘joining unusual groups through which a great deal is gained’ (Brady) and given the ability of secret societies to provide aid to their members’ careers, this may be what catapulted Steamboat Willy into such a plum position. Success in New York was on Disney’s schedule for you know what the song says, “If you can make it there you can make it anywhere.”

Not that Mr. Disney wasn’t born ready for fame and fortune! His birth date of December 5, 1901 shows that he entered the earthly plane during a Jupiter-Saturn conjunction period in work-loving Capricorn so he had the determination to work toward the achievement promised by the societal planets, Jupiter and Saturn. His Sun in Sagittarius and Moon in Libra are Jupiter and Venus ruled, two of the money planets.

Interestingly, Walt Disney’s natal Moon will be eclipsed on April 4, 2015 by a Lunar Eclipse and of course the Moon’s realm includes publicity and public contact–though eclipses are considered ‘wild cards’ and may dredge up secrets and spotlight scandals. His Sun Sag-Moon Libra combination of Fire and Air denotes optimism, great and fiery communication skills, a dramatic streak, and a chivalrous, prophetic character.

Natal Neptune at 00 Cancer is on one of the four Cardinal Points of fame, fortune, recognition, and prominence and of course Neptune’s realms include illusion, art, images, photography, and the silver screen.

The intensity of Scorpio is seen in Walt Disney’s natal Mercury (28 Scorpio) with Mercury the planet of thinking processes, communication, and commerce–so Disney’s natal Mercury conjoins Mickey Mouse’s natal Sun identifying Mickey as Walt’s ‘brainchild’.

As for Mickey, his Sun Sco-Moon AQ identifies him as an ‘impenetrable enigma’ yet a ‘wide-eyed and open-armed friend of the people’ (Harvey.) This blend denotes a capacity for the regeneration (Sco) of social structures (AQ), and one who sees what needs to be done and simply does it.

An observer of life, Mickey’s intent on relieving the suffering of others through his humorous antics in that comedy-tragedy way of traditional thespianism. The Sco-AQ combo of energies gives him a magnetic quality which continues to attract children to the present day.

Hot Dog! Mickey insists on finding the truth which he does regularly on his current TV show, The Micky Mouse Clubhouse–which you already know if you watch it with a 3-year old as I do–treasure hunts and all!

The character Mickey Mouse shares his natal Sun Sco-Moon AQ personality blend with the illustrious Voltaire, Albert Camus, Dylan Thomas, economist Jean Monnet (architect of the European Community), and the modern ‘new world order’ as timed by the third of three conjunctions of Enlightenment planets, Uranus and Neptune on October 24, 1993 at 18 Capricorn…”POLITICAL POWER”.

Yes, the field of Entertainment is one of the most successful diversions for distracting the public from real issues while power elite architects set up their Utopian ‘new world order’!

James Dean’s Fatal Car Crash: an Eclipse Triggered

Teen icon and “genius” actor James Dean was obsessed with speed and with doing things his own way, it is always noted, and his new Porsche Spyder convertible had little chance to give him joy or the racing victories he sought since production of his third film, Giant, had wrapped up. Instead, the 24-year-old’s new Spyder very soon acted as a method of death during a road trip to auto races in Salinas, California on September 30, 1955. At 5:45 pm near Chalome, California the driver of a heavier Ford Tudor coupe driven by student Donald Turnupseed made a left turn across the Y-shaped intersection directly into Dean’s path.

The officially declared “Year of the Teenager”–1956–had not yet dawned in September 1955 and archetypal teenager James Dean had already left the world stage forever.

Astrologers who use the YOD planetary configuration with its ‘crossroads; crisis; turning point; special task’ implications may instantly recognize the road conditions and actions on that day reflected in a YOD-like situation in addition to a transit of dangerous proportions for accident-prone Uranus was triggering Dean’s natal Mars in Leo!

In the car crash chart, a YOD formed as the Moon (physical body) rose @27Pis41 (conjunct Dean’s progressed Ascendant–@28Pis43 if we progress the natal chart to Chalome, CA). Moon opposes SP Moon @25Vir29 (in SP 6th house of Health) with racing Mars @22Vir04 nearing conjunction with SP Moon. So transiting Moon and tr Mars are Angular in Dean’s progressed chart. MC/IC Angles are at critical 29th degrees (MC 29Sag/IC 29Gem).

The car crash is timed by the rising Moon in late Pisces (had he smoked marijuana? He was known to) for at 5:45 pm Luna reached the apex of a YOD with the Neptune-Pluto sextile at its base–all three at 27 degrees which adds to the karmic or fated quality of the tragic event. And if we include the 28th degree Mercury in a sextile with deathly Pluto, the YOD condition becomes more complex and indicative of a crossroads/turning point event of life-changing importance made even more likely his purchase of a race car.

The Neptune-Pluto pair also hints at drug use along with otherworldiness, mysticism, and perhaps more to the point–crooks, swindlers, and organized crime. Separately, both planets are linked with end-of-life conditions and events with one of Pluto’s roles the god of Hades. And with a 12th house apex Moon in a YOD pattern with them we think of 12th house realms such as karma, self-undoing, hospitals, and secret enemies. Chances are, Dean had made quite a few enemies in Hollywood and New York with his rude, use-them-while-they-benefit-you behavior.

And this troublesome teen icon as leader of a generation of rebellious American kids? Uh-oh! Perhaps the Solar Eclipse Series of Dean’s death is of importance? That would be the 11 South which manifested in Jimmy’s natal 3rd house of Short Trips on June 20, 1955 @28Gemini–conjunct his progressed IC (End of Life, Separations). 11 South themes include system failures, old ideas or methods die and need replacing with new ways of handling issues, sudden reforms, and “any blocks may be violently or tragically removed” (Brady, ‘Predictive Astrology’.)

Now if you’ve studied James Dean’s natal horoscope (February 8, 1931 9:00 am CST Marion, IN), you know that this disruptive, conflicted rebel was born with electrical planet Uranus rising at critical degree: ASC 12Ari13, Uranus 12Ari26, a picture of coping ability, sudden crises, individuality, originality, and yes, genius. And of course, an Aries Ascendant makes racing Mars his chart-ruler, here posited in the 5th house of Risk-Taking and Creative Endeavors (such as theater and film acting) in the self-dramatizing, entertaining sign of Leo the Lion (@2:24 Rx). Plus, his natal Uranus in Mars-ruled Aries identifies him among such characters as anarchists, Utopians, and those with a zealous, cantankerous streak.

That his testy Mars was retrograde added to Dean’s tendency to do the unexpected thing and to go against the grain, and he often received criticism from colleagues for being difficult to work with. They never knew what sort of performance he would give until he gave it and he was super-sensitive to any and all criticism or direction–a sense of self-determination is a must for eccentric Uranus rising folk. Plus, a natal 7th house Moon in sensitive Scorpio (early death of Mother) squared Mars making for an emotionally touchy nature and explosive temper for this abandoned child who ended most of his personal relationships before others could break off with him (relating Jupiter Rx and square separative Uranus). This habit applied to relationships with guys and gals and there is a hint of sexual lack of follow through shown in the natal chart (Venus inconjunct Mars). Apparently, personal relationships were either emotionally satisfying to some degree (Venus ruled by Saturn) or were sexually so (Mars in Sun-ruled Leo.)

Now there are many other factors worth considering in the natal horoscope and psyche of James Dean yet this post is actually meant more for notating a certain cosmic condition operating on the day of his death and detailed, below, under ‘Dean’s Pre-Natal Eclipse Triggered’.

That some people since 1955 have proposed deliberate assassination of this budding Hollywood star (said to be bisexual and thus privy to certain other stars’ romantic secrets which if blurted out by the unpredictable Dean would ruin careers and devastate studio bottom lines) is also beyond the scope of this post though a small mention of such may be necessary, below. (Donald ‘Turnupseed’…’Turn Up Speed’?? Weird!)

Dean’s many obsessions and psychological complexes may be viewed within the gestalt of his natal chart, made obvious by an excruciatingly tragic childhood: his beloved, creative Mother died of cancer when he was 9 (or, 8, he said in an interview, linked below). Then his rigid, cold Dad packed his grieving son off to live with relatives in Fairmount, Indiana. In the heavens on his day and hour of birth, we see difficult configurations across the Parental-Security axis–the 4/10 houses and Cancer-Capricorn, a sad, depressive, restrictive Moon-Saturn signature which was lightened somewhat by a Moon-Jupiter trine and an imaginative Moon-Neptune sextile of opportunity. (While alive, his Mom always lifted his spirits with play-acting and such–‘the actor’ able to easily display for an audience a myriad of emotions across his expressive face! See a telling note concerning their marriage blend of Sun and Moon, below.)

And consider Dean’s Cancer-Capricorn planets! Jupiter @11Can36 Rx and powerful manipulator Pluto @19Can12 Rx in 4th house opposite old man Saturn @18Cap09, its own sign, and little boy Mercury @26Cap01 in 10th house. Except for Mercury, all are significators for Father and the authority Dean constantly rebelled against (well demonstrated in his second film, Rebel Without a Cause)…yet there in 10th house is small, ‘speedy’ Mercury with its well-structured mind that naturally tends toward the depressive side in Saturn-ruled Capricorn (a harsh Saturn-Pluto opposition–1A03–ouch!)

With rave reviews of his inspired performance in ‘East of Eden’ now to his credit, James Dean was approaching the verge of finding his inner authority when his life was cut short–and directing was his eventual career goal. Yet psychological improvement may have been far in the future considering his natal Sun-Neptune quindecile (165 degrees), an aspect suggesting a hidden or unknown personal identity (Sun) and may also denote actors who must hide behind masks to win approval and must work hard to define themselves–to themselves, most of all. You see, Father disapproved of a son he considered ‘effeminate’, a son whose Mother had him taking violin and tap dancing lessons.

So on September 30, 1955, the Aquarian Sun actor and developing matinee idol was glad to be free for a while to pursue his longtime love of car racing once Giant had wrapped. Soon he was off to Salinas on a beautiful autumn day with a Porsche car mechanic riding by his side and other of his team following in a vehicle behind. But then Turnupseed turned up at the Mercurial crossroad and the rest is legend.

Dean’s Pre-Natal Solar Eclipse Triggered

James Dean was born into a difficult Solar Eclipse Saros Series, the 4 South. A South Node eclipse denotes an out rushing of energy and has a Saturnian, separative undertone. (Getting swiped by the Tail of the Dragon is seldom if ever fun.)

4 South themes involve fated happenings in financial and relationship matters which feel out of control; blocked or frustrated emotions cause trouble, and there may be a sudden desire to end a relationship (Dean’s forte). Avoiding rash actions until things settle down is the best advice when 4 South is influencing matters (Brady) yet it’s doubtful James Dean would have listened if an astrologer had counseled caution at any point in his brief life, much less on a liberating day just made for racing a new Porsche. Perhaps getting the hay out of town while enjoying new vistas was his way of avoidance.

Yes, 4 South is merely a background influence in his life unless activated by transit or progression so what triggered or stimulated its themes at his death? Actually, there are two: Mercury, planet of travel and vehicles, was Stationary Retrograde at that moment @28Lib37 conjunct transiting Neptune @27Lib12, both in 8th house of Transformation and Death, and both conjoining Dean’s PE degree of 27Lib46–an exact double ‘hit’ to 4 South. Transiting Neptune brings a veiling, deceptive influence with a higher plane possibly in the mix as well (ex: death) and when applicable, may also supply the potential for assassination or murder. Certainly, Neptune, planet of the Unconscious, contributed to a loss of direction, or to taking the wrong path which may describe the events of this accident, if indeed it was that.

Meanwhile, speedy Mercury, strengthened by its Station, rules such things as communications, thinking processes, perceptions and impressions, hand-eye coordination, and the physical senses–including eyesight (Dean’s was not good so he wore glasses). But was the collision really Dean’s mistake?

Perhaps his last words to his passenger yelled into the rushing wind (Neptune) are telling of the fatal crash’s planetary implications including the confused, out-of-sync Mercury-Neptune conjunction (a restless, often deluded pair of energies when blended) as they conjoined Dean’s PE and thus may have affected his ill-advised bolt toward freedom on that day as he separated himself from others:

Dean’s Porsche had the right-of-way as Turnupseed’s Ford unexpectedly crossed the road and smashed into the actor who said as he accelerated, “That guy’s gotta see us–he’ll stop,” an unfortunate, tragic misperception of the other driver’s intentions since, occurring at dusk, Turnupseed may not have seen the gray, low-slung convertible at all as Dean assumed (his progressions show an SP opposition between Mercury in confused yet creative Pisces and Neptune Rx in Virgo–across the 6/12 Vir-Pis axis (victim-savior). Perhaps the collision was only Dean’s mistake.

James Dean was pronounced dead shortly after with internal injuries and a broken neck, jaw, and arms. His passenger, the Porsche mechanic, felt guilty for the rest of life, it is said, yet he survived the 1955 accident with injuries but perished in a car crash in 1981. Mr. Turnupseed suffered minor injuries in 1955 but basically ‘walked away’ leaving Dean’s Porsche a tangled, crushed mess of metal–and millions of fans bereft. No charges were brought against 23-year-old Turnupseed.

As for James Dean’s natal 1st house Chiron, the Wounded Healer and Blindspot, its natal degree and sign, 14Tau07, is a placement indicating a crisis concerning values and one’s physical incarnation on Earth (Clow); plus, Chiron conjoins difficult Fixed Star, Menkar, in constellation Cetus, the Whale–‘a victim of the unconscious’ indicator which supports Dean’s untimely Mercury-Neptune misperception and his tragic misreading of environmental conditions which led to fatality.

Now a word about the ‘shotgun wedding’ of James Dean’s parents, Winton and Mildred (who was 2 months pregnant.) Their early afternoon ceremony on July 26, 1930 (Marion, IN) shows Sun (male; husband) and Moon (female; wife) in Leo with the Moon conjoining Mercury @15Leo, the Lion Point. Mercury may be seen as James, her unborn child and this is supported by the blend’s apt ‘Image for Integration’ given by Charles and Suzi Harvey in ‘Sun Sign-Moon Sign’:

“A child in an Edenic paradise builds a beautiful sandcastle in the sunshine with all the creatures of nature in joyous attendance.”

Shades of play-acting with Mom, later with colleagues, and of the disruptive rebel whose unique, magnetic talent for acting stole the show in ‘East of Eden’!

As noted, James Dean’s natal horoscope is a fascinating study full of conflicted emotions and parental complexes if you haven’t checked it out and I recommend it to you, plus, there are many biographies of his life in print and now available on Kindle.

My primary source during preparation for this post is Donald Spoto’s ‘Rebel: The Life and Legend of James Dean’. Also recommended are the following related links, the first of which is an excellent article by master astrologer Tony Louis:

Plus, columnist Hedda Hopper’s famous interview with Dean published March 27, 1955: Keep Your Eye on James Dean, subtitled, “Indiana Farm Boy, 23, Scores a Smash Hit in His First Film” (‘East of Eden’, with its spun sandcastles upon a California beach.) The caption under his photo reads, “James Dean…wins “young genius” label” and reports that onscreen Dean has an “exciting tenseness and the gift for projecting ever-changing moods.”

Now is such a Scorpio Moon-drenched assessment of his talent Uranian enough for you?

Joan Rivers: Sun Gemini-Moon Sagittarius

Today as I watch a re-broadcast of the celebration of Joan Rivers on TV this astrologer had to have a look at her natal horoscope which may be viewed here:  http://www.astro.com/cgi/chart.cgi?wgid=wgeJwljssKwjAQRb9GsDCFvFqrIRtdCBVcKCIuI41tqE2kSQ35exNczeVwuWeCHrUgvJ-ExNx04qK_anbQWmngBQ3UgLeUAiI7hGBgAXrZAYL9bO34jmZF0PqkTe9SONjF-FjA-ZHp7VrAhoaqBoYMbWABVkFJWJV2EJfd08hJiexJ7b810056JZqE2sWodLKdP338pCcnPwjpAx9cFCXmsxP4fvwBv1052A (apologies–the WordPress add-a-link tab isn’t working for me today.)

Born in Brooklyn, New York on June 8, 1933 (2:00 AM), Ms. Rivers had the communication and fast-thinking skills of a Sun Gemini opposing Moon in Jupiter-ruled Sagittarius, sign of actors and comedians. Not that Geminis can’t be funny, too!  Her just-past Full Moon birth indicates that relationships and hyper-awareness were very basic themes in her life.

As you see from the year 1933, Joan Rivers was born during the war torn Mars-Jupiter-Neptune conjunction in Virgo (sign of The Critic and she was that both onstage and on the Red Carpet, pioneering the “who are you wearing?” schtick.) These planets are the ‘Marseillaise Trio’ with its take-no-prisoners energies. For Joan the Trio appears in the 6th house of Dedicated Work and with her chart-ruler Mars (planet of impulse, energy, and action–Ascendant 3Ari53) Joan is famous for her decades of hard work in Comedy and her highly energized, even manic, performances.

Another factor indicating her high energy level and long career is a trine between natal Sun (ego, pride, physical constitution) and authoritative Saturn (work, concentration) showing longevity of life (June 8, 1933–September 4, 2014, age 81) and her decades-long career. Plus, natal Midheaven (Goal/Career/Public Status) is in Saturn-ruled Capricorn.

Her daughter Melissa (b. January 20, 1968 in NY) has said that her mother in private wasn’t funny with people she didn’t know–such as at dinner parties. She was “shy and nervous” and of course anyone who’s familiar with the Mercury-ruled sign of Gemini knows how very nervous they can be. In addition, Joan’s Mercury and Venus are conjoined @29Gem, a critical or crisis degree. Mercury-Venus gives writing talent and pleasant contacts with the public. Perhaps some of the hectic or manic energy Joan Rivers often displayed along with the ‘quick comeback’ ability of Gemini may be found within the critical 29th degree that is doubly emphasized in her natal horoscope.

After all, a 29th degree may be said to be impatient to reach the next sign which for Joan is Moon-ruled Cancer–in fact, 00Can00, a World Point of Prominence, Fame, and Success–and the Moon rules such realms as publicity and the public.

Now this is merely a brief astro-portrait of Joan Rivers and you may of course find much more information hidden in her natal chart so feel free to leave your insights with this post. Disagree if you must, add more info if it suits!

To close, I add that to me, one of the best things to say about anyone who has passed away is, she will be missed. May the brilliant Joan Rivers R.I.P.

Sleepy Hollow’s Washington Irving (horoscope)

Sleepless in Sleepy Hollow?

by Jude Cowell

Last evening, FOX TV premiered Sleepy Hollow based on Washington Irving’s classic tale of the headless horseman and Ichabod Crane. The TV series melds General George Washington and the American Revolution along with an assortment of decapitated characters. The program is not meant for children, I presume, or at least as a mom, I would recommend they skip it and read the story as I did from the classics list at school.

(School kids do still read classic literature, right?)

Well, since Sleepy Hollow was a favorite of mine, I thought a view of Washington Irving’s natal horoscope might be of interest along with last evening’s planetary transits as they affect his natal planets but my internet connection had other ideas: 3 hours of composing and typing were wiped out in a flash the moment I clicked Publish. So here is a brief version of what disappeared–perhaps this circumstance fits the mysterious tale now revamped for TV.

Actually, it was of interest to me that the George Washington character advised Ichabod Crane that the contest they were fighting was a battle for the future of the world and not just for American independence. Hmm.

And in the show, the ‘headless horseman’ is apparently acting as one of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalyse mentioned in the Book of Revelation. That’s when I checked Irving’s natal chart and found that he was born during a manifestation of the 1 North Saros Series, the same as the August 11, 1999 Solar Eclipse of Nostradamus fame (‘King of Alarm’ or, ‘Terror’–aka, the ‘Mother of All Eclipses’) which also falls into the 1N Series. You may remember that the eclipse’s Fixed Grand Cross has planets on or near the mid-degrees of Taurus the Ox, Leo the Lion, Scorpio the Eagle, and Aquarius the Angel which are mentioned in…the Book of Revelation.

Okay, well. Somebody was aware of this, perhaps including author Washington Irving. Below is an image of his natal chart which has a Rodden Rating of AA for ‘quoted from BC/BR’.

Born April 3, 1783 at 8:30 pm LMT in New York, New York, Mr. Irving was America’s first international literary celebrity but unfortunately, I haven’t time now to add all the stuff about him and his planets that I had here before they were snuffed out. For all I know, this post too will be disappeared before it publishes so let’s embed the chart before Neptune-Pluto supernatural conditions take over!

And yes, Irving’s natal Neptune-Pluto trine, though separating, is an obvious sign of his interests in the occult, the supernatural, and life after death issues. And the ‘headless horseman’ (and in FOX’s Sleepy Hollow, Ichabod Crane as well who turns up in modern day America to star in a TV show) are well described by the contact between the two transpersonal planets since they both make connections to Irving’s personal planets:

WashingtonIrving

Hour of Jupiter; Sun 14Ari09 (conjunct Fixed Star, Hamal:
‘to follow one’s own path’); Moon 9Tau40 conjunct mystical Chiron and the Descendant; the writer’s planet, Mercury, is in cosmic, creative Pisces; Scorpio, an occult sign, is rising; prominent is the 3rd house trio of Mars, Jupiter, and Pluto with Saturn strong in its own sign of Capricorn; Astrology’s modern-day planet, Uranus, is posited in the occult 8th house of Death and Transformation.

Last evening’s planetary links to his natal planets at 9:00 pm edt (NYC) include:

(Tr = current transits)

Tr NN (public contact) and Saturn conjunct (conj) natal ASC 9Sco12; tr MC (the world stage) @25Cap10 conj natal Mars; tr Moon @22AQ13 has just crossed natal IC (endings); tr Uranus @11Ari11 Rx (’11:11′!) is within orb of natal Sun @14Ari09; tr ASC shows natal Chiron, the Priest and Mystic, rising at 9:00 pm with natal Moon (fame) in tow; tr Mercury has recently conjoined natal Neptune, planet of fantasy and imagination; tr Mars has just crossed natal MC (action on the world stage once again) and tr Jupiter, planet of luck, good fortune, and broadcasting @16Can32 will in the near future conjoin natal MC @17Leo17.

Looks like FOX TV may have a supernatural winner! Plus, tr Pluto @8Cap59 Rx will eventually conjoin natal Saturn, a time when the past becomes important to the present and one’s work may be significantly altered or transformed by current circumstances.

Additionally, you’ll find a few basic details penned upon the chart. Let me know if you wish to discuss the horoscope or the TV series by leaving a Comment here…

Astrologer John Townley reviews Fox TV’s Touch

How rare that one of my favorite astrologers writes a review of a TV show–Kiefer Sutherland’s Touch and you can check it out here: http://www.astrococktail.com/Touch.html

Yes, we’re all connected by Threads of Destiny, says astrologer John Townley, author of the Astro-Cocktail blog. And now Fox TV, with the aid of savvy scriptwriters, has premiered what may be another hit for 24 star Sutherland!

Hmmm…is there perhaps a scriptwriter-slash-astrologer in the bunch…?

In any case, it will interesting to discover as the plotline proceeds what NWO propaganda the show promotes toward the unwary among us. Which is pretty much everyone. Especially since we so rarely hear, view, or read anything else.

Now do we?
