Murdoch shuts down tabloid amid scandal

NPR BREAKING NEWS: News of the World Shutting Down Amid Scandal

News International says it is shutting down the ‘News of the World’ tabloid at the center of phone hacking scandal. James Murdoch, who heads the newspaper’s European operations, says the 168-year-old newspaper will publish its last edition Sunday. The scandal has cost the paper prestige and advertisers.

As a Common-Gooder, my first thought is the job loss the shutdown entails. Well, it is a Moon-conjunct-Saturn kind of day, even at the White House as budget/debt-ceiling fusses continue…

  1. I think you’re right, Jude, that Murdoch may be hastening this whole debacle for his own purposes. Years ago I knew a reporter for the WSJ–she was one of the most vain and narrow-minded people I ever knew, and I wondered how she could possibly be a reporter, as it struck me she might have a tendency to just make things up–maybe I was correct, after all 🙂
Thanks once again for your great work, here and everywhere!

    • Thanks, Julie, appreciate it! Your insight into such a character really rings bells now in light of the current media brouhaha over Murdoch practices which seem quite lurid to me. But they were messing w the wrong topic and country when they tried to hack phones of those killed in the 9/11 attacks. Here’s my headline for Mr. Murdoch on that: bottom line trumps conscience and all decency. jc

  2. Yes, your point is possible although I read the situation differently. With his holdings, 200+ journalists thrown under the bus is insignificant in terms of what their wages and bennies take off the bottom line. I read this as a more the case of a trade-off Rupert hopes the Brits will fall for. Reading some of the updates on the story today, members of Parliament from all parties are standing up and confessing their unwillingness to fight Murdoch in the past because of his sheer ruthlessness and willingness to smear anyone who stands in his way. Murdoch’s methods are basically extortion – play my way or I’ll get you.

As for what may have gone on in the US, it appears from the updates that Rupert’s organization was engaging in similar behavior as far back as 2001 after 9/11 in order to get stories about families of the 9/11 victims. Moreover, it appears from updates that, in Britain at least, those engaging in phone hacking and payoffs to the police were working at other Murdoch media entities – it wasn’t just NotW. My hunch is that it’s been going on in the US. Note: remember in the 2008 presidential race that Rupert made a sizable donation to Hillary Clinton’s campaign. Also, I’m a NY state resident and the Albany Murdoch political reporters have been uncharacteristically kind to Andy Cuomo, a putative Democrat. Andy traded off the gay marriage legislation as a sop to the left and a property tax cap of 2% to the right (having learned nothing from California’s peril) plus his ending the surtax on those making more than $500K per year. Ah, Machiavelli. This is Rupert’s reach.

Of course I’m biased. My fervent hope is that this marks the end of the Murdoch multinational (and US) empire and a nudge to other media organizations to take their public oversight and reporting responsibilities more seriously. Interestingly, I see entries at ABC (even on-air news coverage), online only at NBC (except MSNBC) and was disappointed at CBS.

  3. Carol, is it possible the Murdochs outed more of the scandal’s details so that Sr would have a ‘good’ reason to shut down News of the World prior to what he assumed would be the BSkyB acquistion? (And thus saving money on staff’s wages.) Nothing seems too far-fetched for the power-mad to perpetrate these days!

On Thom Hartmann‘s program today it was mentioned that perhaps Murdochian hacking-spying tactics (my term) are being used in the US by Murdoch’s WSJ as well. Interesting…things coming to light under the spotlights of the June 1 and July 1 Solar Eclipses, w the June eclipse in Gemini, sign of communications and news. jc

  4. This is Rupert at his sliest. He badly wants full control of BSkyB which is worth far more in income than a 150-year-old paper he’s tarnished or the 500 (?) journalists thrown under the bus. Make no mistake about it.
