In Iceland they’re jailing bankers!

While I’m not usually a proponent of taking revenge, I freely admit to feeling some measure of gleefulness when reading that in Iceland their search for culprits in their financial system’s collapse in 2008 is inspiring arrests of bankers.

This could fairly become an idea whose time has come across the globe and a practice that can easily spread like wildfire. How can markets ever regain some modicum of trust from the world’s pigeons-at-large with the same criminal syndicates in charge?

Anyway, I met a few athletes from Iceland when the 1996 Summer Olympics were held here in Georgia and I liked them very much. We even talked about genealogy (don’t get me started; they are very knowledgeable about their own ancestry for certain particular reasons.)

So this jailing turn of events tells me that I do like the way Icelanders think. But I’d better hold back on shouting out a hearty “and throw away the key!”

Too much, right?

  1. I can’t access the full article . However, being familiar with the judicial system in the Nordic countries, I can think of a number of charges the Icelandic bankers can be held accountable for. Wikipedia lists some questionable practises Icelandic banks were found to be involved with, such as buying their own shares through holding companies. But since the investigation there is probably going to take years, the most likely cause for anyone being jailed right now, would be the dishonesty as debtor.

  2. Strong, intelligent young people are going to Iceland I’ve noticed. Survival? Curious? I do think Northern climes are sounding the siren call.

  3. Julie, thanks for your comments! Yes, your instinct to stay out of Iceland and not mess with Pluto seems a very good one.

i don’t think they’re not following laws in Iceland, just being more direct about criminality while in the US our gov dances around top financial perps as if the criminal elements here are in charge or something. Oh wait! They are. jc

And Teri, thank you for your thoughts on the matter. i won’t publish them, no, but appreciate your input! i do think that following precedent here in the US could result in jailing some financial criminals of the fraudulent persuasion even up to the equivalent of the High Crimes and Misdemeanor level because of how their self-serving actions almost (traitorously) crashed our financial system, government, etc.

And if the Fed is ‘part’ of the gov (though a private, secretive part) then they should be held accountable for the crash they helped create. But an audit has been nixxed by Congress, of course.

In the past, certain presidents were not so deep in big bankers’ pockets (A. Jackson, Teddy, and FDR, at least) but apparently that has changed for the worse with 2 clues being their huge campaign donations and the SCOTUS decision that knifed the regular voter in the back. jc

  4. I’m a little alarmed to hear they’re throwing them in jail-I presume they’ve actually broken some laws? Don’t misunderstand, I think bankers have behaved abominally-but maybe a ‘why’ exactly would be nice. Oh, maybe I’d better follow that link you provide!

I long to go to Iceland, but my Pluto line runs right through Reykjavik-must have been a nasty Viking way-back-when! Thanks for this-haven’t heard it anywhere else.
