Athens GA musical landmark burns down

The Georgia Theater in downtown Athens, GA was in full flame at 7:00 am edt this morning and has been completely gutted by fire.

The list is too long to name, but many a stellar musical group and artist have played the Georgia Theater and it will be sorely and sadly missed by the community.

  1. I saw the fire. I was at work with my mom and when we pulled in the parking lot, we saw flames literally shooting out of the theatre. I watched as the ACC firefighters controlleed the flames. They did a GREAT job. We need to thank god for the unknown heroes we have in our community!

    • Agreed, we do! Very glad they contained the fire from neighboring buildings.

Thanks for the eye witness account, CJ – it’s a sad situation – and i understand Saturday night (6.20) there’s a benefit show for the displaced theater workers being held at the Classic Center and those with tonight’s or Saturday night’s tickets from GA Theater will have them honored there (hope i heard the announcement correctly on WUGA. Someone correct me if i’m wrong.)

The Classic Center is where I saw the very amusing Craig Ferguson perform Sept ’08 and it’s quite a good venue/stage but i didn’t notice a lot of dancing space for music fans who can’t sit still.

“There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: One is roots, the other is wings.” Teaching children values and giving them the opportunity to excel are essential to good parenting. However, I feel I must also provide my children (and myself) insight into the ones who came before us: our ancestors whose lives and stories have shaped us into who we are. This is my journey; these are their stories…
