Athens GA musical landmark burns down

The Georgia Theater in downtown Athens, GA was in full flame at 7:00 am edt this morning and has been completely gutted by fire.

The list is too long to name, but many a stellar musical group and artist have played the Georgia Theater and it will be sorely and sadly missed by the community.

“a mere filigree of reform”

Sounding somewhat poetic, Robert Reich terms President Obama’s financial reform plan a mere filigree of reform.

Dan Froomkin’s last blog entry at WaPo

Well, now that the Washington Post has fired Dan Froomkin, one of their most popular bloggers, I want to be sure to link to his last entry of June 18, 2009.

Don’t know what sense you make of Froomkin’s firing, but his watchdog role concerning the Obama presidency has been in line with his efforts to keep a close eye on George Bush during his interminable White House years.

And while it’s true that no one blogger can balance the juggernaut of right-wingers like Charles Krauthammer, George Will, and Bill Kristol, Froomkin’s expressed views did help a little.

Historical Note: Froomkin’s sort of overview and info dissemination were once called ‘reporting’ and were integral functions of ‘journalism.’

But maybe there’s a new deal in town: that it’s becoming a bad career move to point out Barack Obama’s shortcomings as president or to critique his policies in any way, for then you become politically inconvenient and a liability.

Well, I wonder where Mr. Froomkin’s future writings will turn up? Because turn up they surely must – and this gnat of a blogger is wishing him all the best!

“There are two lasting bequests we can give our children: One is roots, the other is wings.” Teaching children values and giving them the opportunity to excel is essential to good parenting. However, I feel I must also provide my children (and myself) insight into the ones who came before us: our ancestors whose lives and stories have shaped us into who we are. This is my journey; these are their stories…
