Insights on Mercury-Pluto

One of the more interesting planetary combinations of energies to me is the Mercury-Pluto pair which is associated with propaganda, indepth thinking, speaking, and probing, and is similar in nature to Mercury when posited in plutonian Scorpio.

Reinhold Ebertin, in his ‘The Combination of Stellar Influences’ gives Mercury-Pluto’s principle as: ‘the art of persuasion, suggestion.’

Psychologically, the pair gives restless thinking, a quick grasp of every situation, sharp criticism, good observation powers, intellectual triumph over others, slyness or cunning, crafty subtlety, and diplomacy (where one may use the other traits.

Wielding influence – especially over the masses through speaking or writing – is one the attributes of Mercury-Pluto and its power is invaluable to critics and demagogues everywhere.

Negatively, plagiarism and fraudulent representations or misrepresentations may occur with aspects or other links to the Mercury-Pluto combo (such as Mercury in Scorpio, Scorpio on the 3rd or 6th cusp – houses naturally ruled by Mercury. Ex: George W. Bush has Mercury conj Pluto in Leo – in 1st house of Self, the ‘propaganda catapulter’ as he called himself.)

Overuse of Mercury-Pluto energies can result in disturbances or irritation in the nervous system through excessive zeal – so slow down, Mercury-Pluto, your fanatic side may be showing to your disadvantage!

In fact, hasty thinking followed by premature action, impatience, and overestimating one’s abilities are also dangers with this blend.

Positively there can be success through speaking or writing particularly with specialized subjects but pacing oneself is important for best results.

  1. Hello Jude, its an interesting planetary duo thats for sure. I know a Merc Pluto person who is into making miniatures. Should see the minute detail in her work.

    • Hi Kingsley! Pluto’s depth (small as in ‘nearing invisibility’?) with the manual dexterity of Mercury, would you say? Is her work or photos of it to be found online? jc

      • Yes pretty small indeed. There are usually good reasons why some people find ways to express their inner selves in such ways. The outcomes can be very creative indeed. I go to her place for private viewings. There is a display cabinet there.

      • Kingsley, your comment just reminded me of someone from the past – the wife of my fave art teacher in middle school.

We were neighbors and i was their babysitter. She had a home studio and for years has created/shown/won awards with her paintings which are appr the size of small postcards.

It’s quite astounding the detail she smooshes into them! And she is very shy and ‘retiring’ to the point of discomforting others (which is my point: very sweet lady, but very very shy.)

If she ever paints a mural it would be a breakthrough i’d love to see!

  4. Thanks for this, Jude–I tend to associate propaganda (I think wrongly, after reading this) with Merc/Neptune–but I may be too focused on the idea that the propagandizer (?) is trying to deceive, when as you say, it’s really about persuasion. There’s always something new to learn! jd

    • But Julie, Merc-Nep has its part with lies and fantastical notions, wrong thinking and idealism! ‘Deceptive communications toward the masses’ certainly applies.

Even Merc-Uranus has the power to influence others with its eccentric ideas! And you know that Mercury is ‘like tofu’ picking whatever planetary energy ‘flavors’ it.

Then Nep-Pluto’s fraud and delusions play along, too, with ‘pursuit of peculiar aspirations’ and occultist tendencies for inspiration!

Poor little Mercury has to hear and be swayed by it all, i guess. jude
