“Nothing appears more surprising to those who consider human affairs with a philosophical eye than the easiness with which the many are governed by the few, and the implicit submission with which men resign their own sentiments and passions to those of their rulers. When we inquire by what means this wonder is effected, we shall find that, as force is always on the side of the governed, the governors have nothing to support them but opinion. It is, therefore, on opinion only that government is founded, and this maxim extends to the most despotic and most military governments as well as to the most free and most popular.”
– David Hume, Scottish philosopher and historian, “Of the First Principles of Government” 1758.
Quote compliments of Information Clearing House; following Sun-Moon details courtesy of moi…
David Hume was born in Edinburgh, Scotland on Thursday, April 26, 1711 (OS) during a Great Conjunction of Uranus and Pluto in the late degrees of Leo.
The Uranus/Pluto combo is about revolution and reform; it describes those who are out of the ordinary and are endowed with universal genius (Ebertin.) Seems 1711 was good year for brilliant intellect!
Pioneers, explorers, and those who bring new things into existence correspond to this blend of electric, original Uranian and deep, rich Plutonian energies.
Certainly the Scottish philosopher, economist, and historian, Hume, the ‘Scottish skeptic,’ may be considered one of these.
One of his several works, ‘The History of Great Britain’ in 6 volumes was published from 1754 to 1762. It was a bestseller in his lifetime and was used well into the 19th century as a standard of British history.
It traces events from the Saxons to the Glorious Revolution (anti-Catholic revolt against James II, which climaxed after Protestant William III’s landing in England on Nov 5, 1688. Robert Hieronimus, in his book, ‘The Secret History of the West,’ states that the Glorious Revolution was sinister and had its roots in the time of the Restoration of Charles II and Richard Cromwell, Oliver’s son. Charles II was restored to the throne by the Templars – and from there it gets complicated.)
David Hume’s Earth-Earth Sun-Moon blend is Taurus-Capricorn, giving him a shrewd pragmatism, a natural sense of authority, and a tendency toward bossiness.
Possessive and stubborn, this blend knows what it wants and is quite demanding in relationships – perhaps part of the reason he never married.
A desire for recognition and security is usually achieved with Sun Tau-Moon Cap, and with Hume, people still write about him and read his works. If an 18th century man can be true to type (as we tend to see things) he was a self-restrained yet approachable fellow who had what we would now call an old-fashioned sense of honor.
This blend indicates a paternal concern for the needy, yet it may have a fixity on established routines, and be overmaterialistic.
Noel Tyl says this blend has organizing energy and a strong desire for influence; idealism and realism work hand in hand, usually for a materialistic structure. (‘Synthesis and Counseling in Astrology’, Tyl.)
Famous folk who share this natal Sun-Moon blend are: Adolf Hitler, Cher, Jimmie Stewart, David Byrne, Willie Mays, Yehudi Menuhin, and ‘Peter Pan’ author, James Barrie, who wrote:
“You’ve forgotten the grandest moral attribute of a Scotsman, Maggie, that he’ll do nothing which might damage his career.”
Sun Tau-Moon Cap has one ‘Image for Integration’:
‘A royal banquet honours the longest-serving headmistress of the oldest and most prestigious school in the land.’ (‘Sun Sign-Moon Sign,’ Charles and Suzi Harvey.)
Hume is associated with the Scottish Enlightenment and his contemporary list of friends included Adam Smith, John Locke, and George Berkeley.
There are those who now regard him as the first ‘conservative philosopher’ but the term ‘conservative’ in today’s usage of the word isn’t strictly accurate compared to its use in the 1700s.
David Hume showed in his essays the importance of ‘Moderation in Politics’ and you and I can both think of many modern politicians who could use an indepth study of the work and an embracing of the concept.
Having just discovered a very thoughtful post concerning the ongoing conjunction of Neptune and Chiron, now with expansive Jupiter in tow, I want to be sure you discover it at Astrology by Kingsley for a cosmic, world health approach to this difficult-to-diagnose trio.
It’s a bit after 11 pm edt and I turned the TV to FOX News Atlanta and heard their stark announcement (repeated a few times in the first 3 minutes) that the current outbreak of Swine Flu will be coming to my home state of Georgia and will ‘lead to death.’
Now the virus isn’t here yet as far as anyone knows or has admitted, but FOX wants us to know that death is on its way. It’s their lead ‘story’ – something that hasn’t happened yet but it’s only a matter of time, they assert.
And you do know that the GOP overtook Georgia decades ago and won’t let go. If promoting Swine Flu can torpedo the local economies of this state (and elsewhere, although you may disagree) the Rs can blame the Ds – especially a popular president – and here we go again..all talk, no action from Washington.
Say, you didn’t want affordable health care with your dying breath, did ya?
Then you should have been a pocket-lining politician.
Some interesting thoughts on Swine Flu may be found at The August Review in an article which notes that the current outbreak of Swine Flu has a genetic makeup of elements from human, swine, and bird strains from North America, Europe, and Asia.
Has someone been Frankensteining?
When Pres. Obama holds a ‘first 100 days’ press conference tomorrow evening, 4.29.09, I’ll be watching and listening with SolarFire’s animated chart feature turned on so I can monitor as planets rise, set, and culminate at important points in the chart, and aspects (relationships) between planets form or separate.
If there’s anything interesting to report astrologically, I will, either here or on Stars Over Washington – but here’s a small note: at 8:00 pm edt in Washington, DC, 4.29.09, rising is ’11Scorpio’…”A Drowning Man Rescued.’
Meanwhile I’ve discovered a most enlightening explanation of the presidential ‘100 days’ phenomenon and it’s from Robert Ellman writing from his excellent Intrepid Liberal Journal and including the archetype: FDR’s first 100 days.
Mr. Ellman’s article also gives his analysis of what’s going on currently in our nation so please don’t miss it!
Update Wed 11:30 pm edt: presser ended at 8:59 pm edt with 22Sco38 rising, and MC 3Vir56 as focal point of a YOD (‘Finger of God’ pattern = a special task; where the story picks up again; crisis) so with Mars in Aries and NN in AQ it gives…
Mars/NN = MC: excellent teamwork; partnership values important; integrating one’s individuality into the community.
And with US Secondary Progressed Moon conjunct that MC, we have…
Mars/NN = Sec Moon: emotional attitude toward others shows and leads activity; unions based on soul affinity.
(I see Sec Moon in a national chart as representing where ‘the people’ are in an evolutionary sense. You may disagree. And remember that the US Sibly chart had a Sec Full Moon in Dec 2008 – see sidebar column of Pages for chart and a few details.)
Reinhold Ebertin gives the Mars/NN combination as ‘people working together toward a common end or purpose; a social conscience.’
The presser began at 8:01 pm edt with a Fist of God pattern which also pointed to (8:01 pm’s) MC 18Leo51, the degree position of two disturbing influences: the August 11, 1999 Solar Eclipse that Nostradamus warned us about, and Venus’ position on the morning of 9.11.01. (Solar Eclipse chart in sidebar column of Pages.)
This is also the degree of Mr. Obama’s natal Descendant of Partnerships (his 7:24 pm chart) so natal ASC was at IC, the Foundation of the matter…what he was selling, I think, himself, so we may infer…
Mars/Pluto = natal ASC: showing the hero image; the fighter who dares the impossible.
Sounds like tonight’s presser, his first 100 days, and his entire presidency to me.
Plus, with the MC (‘the Goal’ of the chart) the pattern gives a picture with the base of the configuration (a square between Mars an Pluto), as:
Mars/Pluto = MC: self-confidence; unusual capabilities for life advancement; facing overwhelming danger without power; ambition; dealing with might on either side of any issue; major job maneuver.
As usual, midpoint pictures work in an ‘any, all, or none’ fashion but based on Pres. Obama’s performance so far, I’ll take the ‘dealing with might’ possibility, plus, the ‘major job maneuver’ if tonight’s presentation short circuits tiresome talking points designed to keep anything useful from getting done on behalf of the American people who most politicians seem to think aren’t worth the expenditure.
Good old America: my only nag in the race!
On his Monday schedule: UK Prime Minister Gordon Brown has slipped off to Aghanistan today to consult with Pres. Karzai over Afghanistan, ‘the crucible of international terrorism’ as someone has decided to term it….here’s the video.
You know it used to seem a good idea when world leaders consulted together but these days we never know how the plans they hatch will affect us.
Perhaps today’s meeting between PM Brown and Pres Karzai will progress the ‘poppies vs tulips’ debate! Right.
Gordon Brown ‘snubbed by Pakistan President’: Gordon Brown received an apparent snub today as he arrived in Pakistan fortalks with President Zardari only to be told that he was not available to appear at a joint press conference afterwards.
A smidge of Art: speaking of tulips…Tulipa ‘Maytime’ is now available for download in my Lulu Storefront and more besides.
A big shout-out of Thanks goes to Donna D for the art request!
Space Weather News for April 25, 2009
SUNSET CONJUNCTION: When the sun goes down on Sunday, April 26, step outside and look west. An exquisitely-slender crescent Moon is lining up with Mercury and the Pleiades star cluster for a three-way conjunction in the sunset sky.
Click here for the full story and a sky map.
UNEXPECTED SOLAR ACTIVITY: The sun produced an unexpected burst of activity on April 23 when an enormous prominence rose over the northeastern limb and erupted. A coronal mass ejection (CME) billowed away from the blast site, but the billion-ton cloud is not heading toward Earth.
Visit SpaceWeather News for movies of the event.
Well, April 26’s Moon-Mercury-Pleaides conjunction at Sunset sounds lovely visually and astronomically – but perhaps not as lovely astrologically due to the mythology of the Pleiades.
Plus, first view of the slender Crescent Moon begins the Lunar Calendar month in the East.
The Pleiades is a small cluster of 7 stars which takes up less than one degree in the heavens (about the width of one finger) at the end of the zodiac’s sign of Taurus, the Bull.
There are centuries’ worth of myths associated with the Pleiades, aka the ‘Seven Sisters,’ and themes for the cluster vary slightly: ‘a Narrow Cloudy Trail of Female Stars (Manilius), the Seven Sisters of Industry (China), the children of Atlas, the seven daughters of Pleione, and the seven doves who took Zeus his divine ambrosia.
The Celts (my clan for the most part) link them to the Fates and the achronycal rising of the Pleiades marked their month of mourning for lost friends. (This relates to the first of our month of November which pre-echoes what we now call Halloween, and Nov 1 which some call, All Saints Day.)
In India, the Pleiades myth was linked with seven mothers who judged men and could wound them with their moon-shaped razors, if so judged.
Crescent Moon (symbol of the Middle East), Mercury, and the Pleiades…Iran’s lady captive, Roxanna Saberi, set free perhaps? (Moon is out-of-bounds of the earthly plane and having to manage on her own for now….sign petition below.)
In ancient Greece, the stars of the Pleiades were part of a cult of Aphrodite who gave birth to seven daughters only to turn them into a flock of doves which became the seven stars of the Pleides. The leader of the doves was dove-goddess Alcyone, who brings good weather for the planting season.
Nowadays Alcyone is positioned at 00Gem00 Gemini, and the star’s keywords are ‘something to cry about’ (‘Horary Astrology’, Anthony Louis.)
This difficult star is associated with exile and suffering; water and/or flooding may be connected as well with sorrow ensuing.
Hopefully, the Crescent Moon and Mercury at Sunset on April 26 amongst the beautiful stars of the Pleiades will bring the world dried-up tears and joyful ambrosia sans sadness!

Apr 26, 2009, Washington, DC, Sunset 7:51:36 pm edt:
ASC 6Sco52, Sun 6Tau52…’7 Taurus’…’A Woman of Samaria Comes to Draw Water from Jacob’s Well.’ (‘360 Degrees of the Zodia’ by Lynda Hill.)
Hour of Jupiter (23AQ23 – 4th house with Chiron and Neptune 26AQ12), Moon 1Gem43 just barely into 7th house with Mercury 27Tau06 conj Fixed Star Algol, a star with one of the more vicious reputations in the sky.
In fact, Diana Rosenberg has connected Algol’s prominent activity in charts of harmful fires.
At Midheaven (MC) of the Sunset chart set for DC is 13Leo30 which displays Pres. Obama’s natal Sun position.
The 5th house line-up of Uranus 25Pis00, Venus 00Ari46 (AP), and Mars 3Ari25 have asteroid Atlantis there also at Aries Point…keywords for Atlantis: ‘where we feel doomed; abuse of power.’
Venus and chart-ruler Mars are engaged in an ‘opportunity aspect’ (sextile = 60 degr) with the Moon in Gemini, sign of travel, esp air flights, and I pray that all captives may be returned soon to their sorrowing families as world leaders’ accustomed ‘abuse of power’ be transcended by doing what’s right for a change!
But now there is that lonely, unaspected Saturn 15Vir15 Rx, 10th house, acting as the ‘bucket’s handle’ once again but with Luna on the verge of ‘spilling out’ of the bucket and meeting up with transiting Midas 7Gem50 Direct in 8th house…could this indicate ransom money being paid for a certain detained lady?
And on another level a Moon-Midas contact could indicate more relating to our current financial issues (8th house) as money (Midas) is made available to the people (Moon.)
Well, bring it on – it was ours to begin with!
All in all, I’d say that April 26’s celestial display has more meaning in the Lunar Calendar than in our Solar-based world…because most of the info we get from our culture concerning such celestial events is simply ‘lovely.’
Have you any thoughts on the subject?
