Germany to make final WWI reparation payment

Well, it took quite a few decades but on October 3, 2010, Germany will make its final reparation payment for losing World War I, Der Spiegel reports. War costs do tend to linger in more ways than one, don’t they?

And this surely will result in quite a sense of relief in Berlin!

Actually, I did not know they were still paying off the debt, did you?

Intelligent discontent in America

UPDATE Sept 9, 2008: last week was the Republican National Convention and if you noticed the flag waving and the chants that sounded more like hitler’s youth than anything else, you may wish to visit the below post with Eugene Debs’ take on those “gentry who are today wrapped up in the American flag.”

The politcally based tactic has worked for warmongers before, you see, and is being trotted out once again for Campaign 2008. Predictable, but no less an abominable travesty filled with tragic deceptions and illusions.

Eugene Debs was arrested and imprisoned for giving his famous, eloquent anti-war speech in Canton, Ohio on June 16, 1918 when he strongly cautioned against US entry into WWI. His words are worth keeping close by in these dark days for they are from the heart of a man with a conscience. #

And yeah, I’ve helpfully tossed in a few natal chart details for Eugene Debs, one of the better American orators of his day and several-times-running presidential candidate who devoted his life to the betterment of the common worker, to social justice, and to world peace.

And with December upon us in the West, world peace is supposedly our hope and desire for the season (when we’re not busy bombing other countries and disrupting the lives of millions, that is. Guess that doesn’t count if you’re a neocon chickenhawk–even though the hypocrisy of bombing the Holy Land, then turning around and celebrating “Peace on earth, good will toward men” is staggeringly and blindingly obvious.)
